Tsui Hark will direct and Andy Lau will star in the period martial arts suspense thriller Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame for production company Huayi Brothers. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tsui and Huayi will bring to life an imagined case solved by a real Tang Dynasty detective. The film has a $13 million budget, and was scripted by Chen Kuofu, Tsui’s wife and partner Nansun Shi and former Columbia and Emperor executive Peggy Lee....

Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon are in final negotiations to star in New Line Cinema’s upcoming comedy Four Christmases, it was announced today by New Line Production President Toby Emmerich. In the film, Vaughn and Witherspoon will play a couple who struggle to visit all four of their divorced parents’ homes on Christmas day. Four Christmases is based on a screenplay by Matt Allen and Caleb Wilson. It is being produced by Spyglass Entertainment’s Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum and Jon Glickman....

According to Variety, an ongoing Federal court battle over Superman ended when Judge Stephen Larson ruled Wednesday that the family of the superhero’s co-creator, Jerry Siegel, has “successfully recaptured” rights to additional works, including the first two weeks of the daily Superman newspaper comic-strips, as well as portions of early Action Comics and Superman comic-books. The ruling is based on the court’s finding that these were not “works-made-for-hire” under the Copyright Act....

Several Oscar-nominated screenplays are among the nominees this year for the Writers Guild of America Awards. However, this did not prevent under-recognized screenplay adaptations and new upstarts from coming in. According to Variety, upstarts to be nominated for original screenplay included dark thriller comedy The Menu, Written by Seth Reiss & Will Tracy, and Jordan Peele’s science fiction thriller Nope. Meanwhile, recognized adaptations for screen included the Marvel film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and the Harvey Weinstein scandal film She Said–movies adapted from the comic book by Ryan Coogler & Joe Robert Cole and from the investigative journalism by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, respectively....
