This year’s Netflix Geeked Week has revealed various new additions to the streaming platform catalog in the genre. Archive 81 was not among them, unfortunately; released in January, the horror show was not renewed for a second season. The series was based on a found footage horror podcast with the same name, and one of the executive producers was none other than James Wan....

It’s a man versus a bee. Need we say more? Netflix’s Man vs. Bee quickly became a hit with viewers after it took flight on the steamer in June, logging 25.4 million hours viewed in the first week after release. The comedy miniseries found an audience with fans of old-style slapstick humor and the comedy of star Rowan Atkinson. The concept of person vs. animal or object in nature is one of the oldest tropes in entertainment, yet Atkinson brought a delightful new spin on it here....

Strange World is the latest film from Walt Disney Animation, and it focuses on a legendary family of explorers and the three generations that must put aside their differences to go to a mysterious land to save their world of resources. The movie is heavily inspired by pulp science fiction stories of the 1930s and 40s like Journey to the Center of the Earth, John Carter, and King Kong. With a huge budget (by Korean standards - not American), The Host is an impressive sci-fi film about a monster that is created when an American scientist forces his direct report to dump an enormous amount of formaldehyde into the Han River rather dispose of it in the proper way. Like the original Godzilla, there is some strong social commentary going on about the United States that is not explicitly anti-American, but certainly critical of certain things- the least of which is that the formaldehyde scenario was inspired by real events....

Jon Favreau will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023. To say that AMC’s The Walking Dead has been a success is almost an understatement. I’m surprised that the pristine Hathaway, who supposedly charmed people in Ella Enchanted and The Princess Diaries series, was even going to be in a Judd Apatow flick....

The Witcher returns to Netflix with a spectacular second season loaded with bloody twists. The series ups the ante on monsters, betrayals, storytelling, and intriguing character development. We last saw Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra) destroying Nilfgaard’s invading army at the Battle of Sodden using outlawed fire magic. Then Princess Ciri (Freya Allen) runs to embrace Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) after losing everything she loved. The Witcher finally claims his destined daughter from the “Law of Surprise”, but their journey together is treacherous....

While the Japanese entertainment industry may be dominated by anime, horror, and Studio Ghibli, filmmaker Akira Kurosawa dominated the industry their from the late 1940s up until the mid-1960s (after which point, he made one film every five years). His work, a collection of both traditional Japanese theater and history along with a range of deep human drama and emotional authenticity, continues to surpass the test of time from generation to generation....

The new canon is keeping the Internet busy! Here’s what we’ve learned about Star Wars since the release of The Last Jedi on blu-ray and as we get closer to Solo: A Star Wars Story. A look at some upcoming toys revealed that Solo took a deep dive into the old EU material now called Star Wars Legends for some of the movie’s vehicles. We also learned that Ron Howard will get sole directing credit on the next standalone movie....
