Whether it be the 1960s, which are associated with renewed hope and newfound cultural liberality, the 1990s and its technological developments and the invention of the internet, or the 2010s, when social media reinvented the way we live our lives. These cultural shifts, changes in attitude, and responses to world events are also reflected in film, with every decade representing something slightly (or totally) different from the last....

The Great British Bake Off, or The Great British Baking Show as it’s known in the colonies, is ready to kick off its 10th season on television. It’s already been released in the UK and will come to Netflix for US audiences this week. We’re all excited to get another look at the baking challenges in this long-running feel-good competition where we all want everyone to win. There is huge anticipation to have the hosts and judges return as twelve new contestants take to the ovens to prove themselves and their dough....

IM Global has released two pieces of concept art and the official synopsis for The Happytime Murders, which doesn’t have a release date yet. This comedy is set in a world where both humans and puppets live together, when a series of murders shakes up the puppet community. Actress Saoirse Ronan has just signed on to play the lead role in The Host, an adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s first novel after the Twilight series. Saoirse Ronan will play Melanie Snyder, one of the remaining few humans left on Earth after an attack by parasitic aliens called Souls. This alien species can enter a human and essentially erase their personality from within. When Melanie is invaded by a Soul named Wanderer, he finds she won’t surrender and starts to connect with her past life....

Studio Ponoc is returning to the big screen. The studio behind Mary and the Witch’s Flower has released the first teaser for their upcoming film, The Imaginary. The trailer can be viewed below. The film is an adaptation of A.F. Harrold’s novel of the same name. Emily Gravett provided illustrations. The book was the winner of the 2016 UKLA Book Award, and the 2015 British Book Design and Production Award (both Children’s Category and Overall Winner)....

The Good The packaging. Interesting editing choice for the new documentary films. The Bad Poor compression; not much new footage in the “new” documentaries; no real new bonus features. It is interesting reviewing The Lord of the Rings Limited Edition DVD set because these movies have been out for so long. I debated with myself over how I was going to review these discs simply because there is so little that is new about them....

The Good A great film from the 1980s gets kids and horror right. The Bad I only wish there was more… or at least a sequel in the works. The Monster Squad is one of the lost kids movies from the 1980s. People will talk about The Goonies, The Lost Boys and other films, yet we never seem to hear too much about The Monster Squad unless that talk is coming from die hard fans of the horror genre....

Screen Gems has teamed with Constantin Film and Unique Features to develop the motion picture franchise The Mortal Instruments based on The New York Times best-selling book series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. Jessica Postigo wrote the script which is based on the first book in the series, “City of Bones.” Constantin Film’s head of Film & TV Martin Moszkowicz will executive produce and Robert Kulzer will produce the project via the Constantin Film banner along with producing partners Michael Lynne, Robert Shaye, and executive producer Dylan Sellers via their Unique Features banner....

Summit Entertainment, a Lionsgate company, announced today that the home entertainment release of the current installment in the studio’s blockbuster Twilight Saga film franchise, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1, has sold over 5 million DVD and Blu-ray units in the first 11 days of release. DVD sales for the film, which became available at retail on February 11th, are approximately 13% ahead of sales of the third film in the franchise, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, at the same point in its release....

20th Century Fox is gearing up to start production in the somewhat near future on The Wolverine, the studio’s sequel to 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. One of the few things we know about this superhero follow-up is that it will be set in Japan, where Hugh Jackman’s title character goes in search of more clues about his origin. Earlier today, a mysterious one-sheet leaked online, supposedly from the offices of The Wolverine director James Mangold....

Shonen is defined as a genre of anime and manga from Japan that targets young male audiences. However, though they target a young male audience, they are often enjoyable for all ages and genders. Generally, they are usually a little cleaner and focus on action, adventure, and fighting storylines. They most often also have a male character for the main character, but that isn’t always the case. Shonen is quite a large genre, and there are hundreds of anime released that focus on that audience group....

Initial reviews of Thor: Love and Thunder have continued the current Marvel trend of mixed opinions in contrast to a huge predicted box office. In line with other recent releases like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder had struggled to find a consistent string of early reviews, but that hasn’t stopped projections indicating a worldwide debut of over $300 million for Chris Hemsworth’s return as the God of Thunder....

Get into some nasty Internet crimes on DVD and Blu-Ray this May. Untraceable will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray on May 13. The standard version will be priced at $28.95, while the Blu-Ray will go for $38.96. The film stars Diane Lane and Colin Hanks. ABC made an announcement about the immanent return of their two new series FlashForward and V today. Both shows will be back in March, 2010. Get ready for all your favorite animated shorts on DVD. Warner Bros. Presents: Academy Awards Animation Collection will be released on February 12. The collection will be available in two separate editions. The single-disc edition will feature the 15 animated shorts that have won the Oscar for Animated Short Film, while the deluxe edition will be a three-disc set that features those 15 winning shorts plus the 26 animated shorts that were also nominated for Animated Short Film....
