Before Michael Mann participated in changing television with the iconic Miami Vice, he spent a good five years working as a writer on other television dramas. When this line of work had run its course, Mann looked to new horizons in filmmaking. His debut film, Thief, was released in 1981, to great critical acclaim, but little commercial success, gathering only $11 million at the box office. Over time, thanks in large part to the success of subsequent Mann films like The Last of the Mohicans, Heat, The Insider, and Collateral, Mann’s overall filmography became more well-known and the film gathered a cult following that has remained prevalent in film buff zeitgeist since, hailed by many to be among the best crime films ever made....

While talking with Thomas Jane about his upcoming directorial debut Dark Country, which is set to hit DVD on October 6th, the in-demand actor revealed that he will be playing Glen Sherley in a biopic about the armed robber turned country musician. Shirley was a protégé of Johnny Cash that escaped Folsom Prison to become a singer songwriter. He penned Cash’s song Greystone Chapel, and later killed himself under the pressure of the spotlight....

TNT, television’s top-rated destination for drama, and, TBS, the top-rated comedy network, have renewed their agreement with the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) to continue carrying the Screen Actors Guild Awards, according to an announcement today from Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks, and Doug Allen, SAG’s national executive director. TNT has been home to the SAG Awards since 1998. TBS began its simulcast of the prestigious awards show in 2006....

TNT is going to ramp up the drama this summer with a spectacular lineup of original series, including four brand new shows and five returning favorites. Set to launch new seasons this summer are the hit series Falling Skies, Rizzoli & Isles, Major Crimes, Perception and Franklin & Bash. New series joining them in the lineup include King & Maxwell; the unscripted competition series The Hero and 72 Hours; and the docu-drama procedural Cold Justice (working title)....

Vulture received an email from screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, who revealed that Tom Cruise will have a starring role in Top Gun 2, instead of the cameo that was originally reported. Here’s what he told the site: The site, which broke the original story a few weeks ago, had indicated that Tom Cruise was open to appearing in the Top Gun sequel in a smaller role. Now it seems that Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell will be at the center of the movie’s storyline....

NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon has canceled all of its tapings for this week, following the death of host Jimmy Fallon’s mother, Gloria Fallon, over the weekend. Jimmy Fallon also cancelled the Friday, November 3 taping to be with his mother in the hospital for what was said to be a “brief illness,” although no cause of death has been given. Here’s what an unidentified family spokesperson had to say in a statement, confirming Gloria Fallon’s death, at 68 years of age....

The director also spoke about the negative outcry over Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which earned over $800 million worldwide but was lambasted by the critics and many fans. “I’ll take some of the criticism,” says Bay, standing at a set built to resemble a dilapidated nuclear reactor. “It was very hard to put (the sequel) together that quickly after the writers’ strike (of 2007-08).” Bay also noted that this film, “builds to a final crescendo,” and said that they removed the “dorky comedy....

After several sequels, a prequel and a different TV series, Kevin Bacon is returning to the Tremors franchise. After 27 years, a new TV series about the giant, killer sandworms, known as Graboids, is heading to TV and, after some months in limbo, it looks like the project is headed to SyFy. The network is going to make a pilot and, if all goes well, the new take on Tremors will go to series for at least one season....

Movies are not without their archetypes, often filled with well-known names from the years. Morgan Freeman, the wise elder. Michael Cera, the awkward teenager. Sofia Vergara, the feisty latina. Zooey Deschanel, the manic pixie dream girl, and so on. Many of these actors are not only capable of representing these depictions but are representative of Hollywood’s fixation with appearances. (season 2) In addition, VH1’s own Tiffany “New York” Pollard is set to star in a new show on the channel with New York Goes To Work, where she will have to learn a new job skill each week....

It seems like there has been a constant comparison made between the DCEU and MCU, with the former always seeming to be playing catch up with the mighty Marvel machine. However, after spending many years distancing themselves from such comparisons, Warner Bros.Discovery CEO David Zaslav has revealed at the company’s Q2 2022 earnings call that the future of the DC franchise will be governed by a 10 year plan, which is “inspired” by none other than Kevin Feige’s Marvel Studios....

It may have taken them awhile but Warner Bros. Entertainment Group has finally joined up with iTunes. In a story from Home Media Retailing, Warner Bros. will now be “repurposing” their content to make it available via Apple’s hugely popular iTunes portal. The cost will be $1.99 per episode to download and watch them on a computer or iPod. Some of the titles being offered are Friends, Babylon 5 and MADtv....

It may be 2022, but the 1980s are alive and well. From the resurgence of neon colors and oversized blazers to the nostalgic themes present in modern media, the ‘80s are everywhere you turn. The decade is one that has an immediately recognizable aesthetic, and Hollywood, among others, loves it. Decade-inspired media is nothing new. Modern movies like Captain Marvel, Fear Street: 1994 and American Hustle all take place in a specific decade and completely envelop the audience in the past through the use of music, costumes, hair and make-up, and the overall environment....

It’s no mystery at this point in time that Jim Carrey is a man with range. Sure, his origins are in comedy, but he’s proven time and time again that he can pivot from slapstick to serious without skipping a beat. While Carrey is most well known for being the resident funnyman from his In Living Color days, he’s not a one trick pony. After two successful seasons, Netflix is literally changing the face of The Crown, casting Olivia Colman to replace Claire Foy in the title role of Queen Elizabeth. The streaming service had always planned for Claire Foy to play Queen Elizabeth for just two seasons, with the producers bringing on Olivia Colman to play the title character for Season 3 and Season 4, although the streaming service has yet to officially renew the hit Netflix series for the next two seasons yet....

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman, in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Christopher Nolan stated: In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said: “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story....

With more than a week to go before the highly-anticipated release of The Dark Knight, Fandango, the nation’s leading moviegoer destination, reports that many of its pre-opening Thursday midnight shows on July 17 are already sold out in cities across the country, from New York to Boise, Idaho. Theaters continue to add 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. showtimes to meet the ticketing demand. “The Dark Knight may be responsible for a lot of bleary eyes at work next Friday morning,” says Rick Butler, Chief Operating Officer for Fandango....

HBO has announced that they have renewed The Deuce for a third season, which will serve as the last. David Simon and George Pelecanos have previously stated that the hit series was always intended to be a three-season show, and they are thankful that HBO gave them the green light to finish what they started. The first two seasons take place in the 1970s New York City porn scene and stars Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Franco....
