Queen Elizabeth II faces all manner of personal and professional drama and turmoil in the newly released trailer for The Crown Season 5. Released courtesy of the official Netflix YouTube channel, The Crown Season 5 is scheduled to land on Netflix on November 9 and will leap into the ’90s and detail the tumultuous marriage between Charles, the Prince of Wales, and Princess Diana, which sadly ended in tragedy. Check out the trailer for The Crown Season 5 below.
Inspired by real events, The Crown is a fictional dramatization and tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II and the political and personal events that shaped her reign. The series first began back in 2016, and has so far covered the decades from the early years of Elizabeth II and her marriage in 1947 right through to the 1980s. The fourth season of The Crown dropped audiences into the 1980s, with Elizabeth clashing with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher while Prince Charles enters an intensely tempestuous marriage with Lady Diana Spencer.

Thus, The Crown Season 5 will follow suit, leaping forward into the next decade and landing us all back in the 1990s. It’s a new decade, and the royal family is facing what may be their biggest challenge yet: proving their continued relevance in ‘90s Britain. As Diana and Charles wage a media war, cracks begin to splinter the royal foundation.
The Crown Season 5 will introduce an entirely new cast, with celebrated actress and Academy Award nominee Imelda Staunton taking the lead as Queen Elizabeth II. Staunton takes over from Olivia Colman, who portrayed the monarch throughout The Crown seasons 3 and 4. Tenet star Elizabeth Debicki will portray Princess Diana, taking over the role from Season 4’s Emma Corrin, with The Wire and The Affair actor Dominic West set to star as Prince Charles, a role that was previously played by Josh O’Connor.
The rest of the supporting cast for The Crown Season 5 will include Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville (Sherwood, Let Him Go) as Elizabeth’s sister Princess Margaret and Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting, Elementary) as Prime Minister John Major.

Detailing the events surrounding Charles and Diana will certainly be no easy feat, with the series no doubt hoping to approach the subject with sensitivity. While still maintaining the drama that The Crown has been known for, of course. A fictionalized depiction of such an emotional period in the history of the monarchy is likely to reignite the debate over whether episodes of The Crown should begin with a warning. One person who thinks that they should is the treasured Dame Judi Dench.
The Crown Season 5 is scheduled to land on Netflix on November 9, 2022.
