We have our official trailer for The Cuphead Show! ahead of its premiere on Netflix next month. Featuring a classic animation style reminiscent of 1930s cartoons, the upcoming series is directly based on the Cuphead video game originally released in 2017. Because the game was a big seller that also drew critical acclaim, Netflix hopes the animated series will similarly be a success. You can see what it will be like by watching the new trailer below.
The synopsis reads: “Based on the award-winning video game that smashed onto the scene with a gorgeous retro animation style, The Cuphead Show! is a character-driven comedy series following the unique misadventures of loveable, impulsive scamp Cuphead and his cautious but easily swayed brother Mugman. As the two scour their surreal homeworld of the Inkwell Isles in search of fun and adventure, they always have each other’s back. Unless there’s only one cookie left, in which case it’s every cup for himself. The Cuphead Show! combines nostalgic delights, side-splitting gags, and a healthy dose of the heebie jeebies—especially when a ridiculously weird nemesis, The Devil himself, arrives on the scene to toy with our heroes.”
The Cuphead Show! consists of twelve episodes. Its voice cast includes Tru Valentino (Cuphead), Frank Todaro (Mugman), Joe Hanna (Elder Kettle), Luke Millington-Drake (Devil), Grey Griffin (Ms. Chalice), Wayne Brady (King Dice)
For King Features, C.J. Kettler will serve as the Executive Producer and Cuphead creators Chad and Jared Moldenhauer will serve as Executive Producers for Studio MDHR. The series will be produced by Netflix Animation and is executive produced by Emmy and Annie Award-winning producer, Dave Wasson (Mickey Mouse Shorts) and co-executive produced by Cosmo Segurson (Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling).
The Cuphead Show! Looks Just Like the Game
Netflix
“The IP of the game is unbelievable and it did set up some relationships, but we’ve taken it into another place that is really about the two brothers. They actually talk and they interact with people and they don’t just shoot people, we promise!" Wesson said of the series at the 2020 Annecy Animation Festival, per Polygon.
“All the bosses in the game, we’ve tried to integrate into our project,” added Segurson. “Not to give away any spoilers, but figuring out that relationship between Cup and Mugman and the characters that everyone’s familiar with in the game, and giving them a voice and giving them a backstory. That’s been a really fun challenge for the team.”
Art director Andrea Fernandez also said, “Everything, not just the paintings, but the color palette, the effects, the way we handle props, the linework, everything is looked at from a lens of like, could they have done this in the 30s? Could they have pulled this off? If it feels like it’s too modern or not possible for them to have done then we kind of pull back and reassess.”
Gamers and new fans to the franchise alike can see what the hype is about when The Cuphead Show! starts streaming on Netflix on Feb. 18, 2022.
