The last six months have been tough for fans of The CW’s scripted shows. After watching many DC series such as Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman and Stargirl fall to the ax and The Flash heading into its final season, it seems that the scripted shows to have seemingly survived the cull may not be safe yet. According to a new report, the cuts are set to continue as majority owner Nexstar progress further with their realignment of the network in terms of a long-term strategy to maximize profits.

The second half of the 2022/2023 season doesn’t appear bright for the current roster shows that include The Winchesters, All-American, Walker, and the upcoming Gotham Knights. The Hollywood Reporter noted that when the 2023-2024 slate is announced, it could look much lighter than it currently does. According to the publication, The CW will be trying to trim its scripted content to “less than five U.S. scripted originals.” While there has previously been a big focus on the Arrowverse and other franchises on The CW, Nexstar seems to be more interested in looking at “profitability” as a main priority, which means cheaper shows.

The 2022 cull of programs reached beyond the Arrowverse franchise, with other shows, including Legacies, Charmed, Roswell, and 4400 feeling the cut and the development of some potential future series being stopped in its tracks. This obviously didn’t go down well with viewers, especially as it coincided with the slashing of many HBO Max projects, resulting in unhappy people voicing their opinion on social media.

Which Shows Will Get Renewed At The CW Among the New Wave of Cancelations?

While a year ago, it would have been easy to name a dozen shows on The CW that were guaranteed to be around still come 2024, that certainty has now been well and truly wiped from everyone’s minds. Picking out which of the remaining series in The CW’s current slate will be back next year is a tough, if not an impossible task, as many of those shows are some of the biggest rating winners and the most costly productions.

According to the latest information, All-American, which has already been renewed, is the only show guaranteed to be returning for the new season. With shows like The Winchesters, Walker: Independence, and Walker having all been constant presences in the Top 5 ranking on the network, there would be a strong belief these will also be back. However, bearing in mind the reported desire to have just five scripted shows on the books, that doesn’t bode well for the remaining DC shows.

The Flash is already ending after its 9th season, and Superman & Lois also looks to be on borrowed time. As a result, Gotham Knights will have to instantly prove itself to remain in contention as a 2024 survivor. As the year progresses, The CW’s next chopping list will become apparent, and until then, fans can only wait and hope their favorites make it through another visit of TV’s equivalent of the Grim Reaper.
