A new period drama series, dubbed The Decameron, has just been announced at Netflix. The series is the latest project to come from an overall deal with Jenji Kohan, creator of the critically acclaimed series Orange Is the New Black. Described as a soapy period drama, The Decameron looks to examine the “timely themes of class systems, power struggles, and survival in a time of pandemic with a touch of levity, brought together by a charming and riotous ensemble fo characters.” You can read the official logline below.
The series is created by Kathleen Jordan (Teenage Bounty Hunters, American Princess), who also serves as showrunner and executive produces alongside Kohan (Glow, Teenage Bounty Hunters, Orange Is the New Black), as well as Blake McCormick, and Tara Herrman for Tilted Productions. Mike Uppendahl (Ratched, American Crime Story) also serves as a director and executive producer.

“Kathleen Jordan is the real freakin’ deal," Kohan said of teaming up with Jordan for the series. “I am so excited and grateful that I get to work with her and we get to make this awesome, funny, timely, weird show together for Netflix.”
Jordan added, “I’m absolutely thrilled that I get to work with Jenji, Tara, Blake, and Netflix again. I can’t wait for people to meet this ridiculous group of characters. I’m sure Giovanni Boccaccio would be… confused?”

After creating the hit show Weeds for Showtime, Jenji Kohan found success at Netflix with her show Orange Is the New Black. This led to Kohan signing her overall deal with Netflix in 2017. Kohan has since executive produced Glow and Teenage Bounty Hunters.
“Bold, outspoken, and totally fearless, Jenji has constantly raised the bar for storytelling at Netflix,” Netflix’s VP of Original Conetnt, Cindy Holland said at the time of the deal’s signing. “She possesses a rare and special talent to say what’s unspoken, choose the unexpected over the safe and drive the cultural conversation – and audiences love her for it. She has been with us from the beginning and we could not be more thrilled to continue working together over the coming years.”
The Decameron doesn’t yet have an official release date at Netflix.
