Stranger Things is gearing up for its fifth and final season, with Matt and Ross Duffer telling The Hollywood Reporter the script for the first episode is complete. The Duffer brothers discussed the show at a Los Angeles event, along with series stars such as Caleb McLaughlin, Joseph Quinn, Jamie Campbell Bower, Priah Ferguson, Eduardo Franco, and Millie Bobby Brown, who attended virtually.

THR captured comments made by the cast and creators during their panel, where the Duffer brothers said the script for Stranger Things 5 has already left executives in tears, in a good way. “We did get our executives to cry, which I felt was a good sign that these executives were crying,” Matt Duffer said. “The only other times I’ve seen them cry were like budget meetings.”

The duo shared their plan for the upcoming season with Netflix in a two-hour meeting, outlining the major plot points that occur during the final entry. Shawn Levy, who serves as an executive producer on Stranger Things, says, “those were different tears.”

Stranger Things 4 delivered one of the series’ most action-packed and VFX-heavy seasons so far, meaning the production time on the fifth installment could be lengthy. However, fans will have to wait for more news regarding the upcoming release as writing has only recently begun.

“As a witness and having been in that two-hour pitch room and having read this first script — I’m paralyzed with fear that I’ll spoil anything but I will say the thing about these Duffer brothers is that even though the show has gotten so famous and the characters have gotten so iconic and there’s so much about the ’80s and the supernatural and the genre, it’s about these people, it’s about these characters. Season five is already so clearly taking care of these stories of the characters because that’s always been the lifeblood of Stranger Things.”

Will Stranger Things 5 Feature Major Character Deaths?

     Netflix

Stranger Things has featured several notable deaths throughout the last four seasons, including characters like Bob Newby, Billy Hargrove, and Eddie Munson. However, most of the main cast has remained intact, with some series leads calling for more main character deaths.

Maya Hawke recently said she would “love to die and get my hero’s moment,” which came after Millie Bobby Brown said Stranger Things should take more inspiration from Game of Thrones. The popular fantasy series wasn’t afraid to kill off its main stars, which may become more common in the final season of the Netflix series.

As the Duffer brothers and Shawn Levy said, the final season left execs in tears, meaning audiences may be in for a heartbreaking finale. Of course, audiences will be rooting for the kids from Hawkins when Stranger Things 5 arrives, although fans shouldn’t expect the series to end without a significant amount of Upside Down action.
