Another season of The Empress is on the way, as Netflix announced on Tuesday that the series has been renewed for a second season. Per THR, it has also been confirmed that the second season will bring back Devrim Lingnau and Philip Froissant will return to reprise their respective roles as Empress Elisabeth and Emperor Franz-Joseph I. Melika Foroutan, Johannes Nussbaum, Almila Bagriacik, and Jördis Triebel also return, as will writer and showrunner Katharina Eyssen.

Netflix acknowledged the high viewership of the series around the world, making it clear that they had a new hit on their hands with The Empress. According to the streamer, the series spent five weeks as one of the most-watched non-English shows and topped the top 10 list in 88 countries frmo around the world. It was a no-brainer for the company to order another season, as explained by Katja Hofem, Netflix’s VP of content for DACH Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

“It is wonderful to see that our very own interpretation of this popular historical figure has generated interest and enthusiasm among so many people. It shows that people want to see more of Elisabeth,” Hofem said.

The Empress Has Impressed

The Empress, or Die Kaiserin, was created by Katharina Eyssen and Lena Stahl. The show follows Elisabeth “Sisi” von Wittelsbach as she finds love in her sister’s intended fiance, Emperor Franz Joseph I, along with the hardships this brings about with others such as her mother-in-law/aunt. It premiered on Netflix at the end of September, consisting of six episodes with its freshman season.

While the show hasn’t yet been ranked on the Tomatometer at Rotten Tomatoes with reviews from approved critics, its audience score is sitting fresh with a score of 83%. The series getting renewed will likely bring more attention to The Empress as well, so perhaps a score on the Tomatometer isn’t too far off. For thef ans who get into the series, let’s just hope it doesn’t get the rug pulled out from under it after two seasons, as has recently happened to Fate: The Winx Saga along with many other Netflix shows.
