Apple TV+ has released the official trailer for its upcoming limited series, The Essex Serpent. Set in rural Victorian England, the show stars Tom Hiddleston and Claire Danes in the lead roles as they try to solve the mystery of a mythological creature terrorizing the town. The Essex Serpent is based on the best-selling 2016 novel of the same name by Sarah Perry. The series is written by Anna Symon (Mrs. Wilson) and directed by Clio Barnard (Dark River). The Essex Serpent will premiere on Apple TV+ on May 13. You can check out the trailer below.
The plot synopsis for the show reads: “The Essex Serpent follows London widow Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes) who moves to Essex to investigate reports of a mythical serpent. She forms a surprising bond of science and skepticism with the local pastor Will Ransome (Tom Hiddleston), but when tragedy strikes, locals accuse her of attracting the creature.”
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Featuring quaint yet haunting visuals and a chilling score, The Essex Serpent trailer opens with the disappearance of a woman at the hands of an implied sea creature. As Danes’ character Cora Seaborne heads to the village to investigate the creature, Hiddleston’s Will Ransome narrates how the creature is nothing but an invention. The townsfolk get more anxious as mysterious events occur in the village and lay the blame on Seaborne. Is the serpent real? What is it attracted to? All the questions will be answered when the show drops next month.
Dealing with the themes of love, religion, superstition, and science, The Essex Serpent (novel) was one of 2016’s best books and made it to several year-end top-10 lists. And judging by what we’ve seen so far, the series is doing complete justice to the novel. Alongside Hiddleston and Danes, The Essex Serpent also stars Frank Dillane, Hayley Squires, Clémence Poésy, and Jamael Westman.
Tom Hiddleston is Collaborating With Apple on Another Miniseries, The White Darkness
Tom Hiddleston will partner with Pachinko creator Soo Hugh for Apple’s The White Darkness. Based on David Grann’s nonfiction book, the show is “inspired by the true life account of Henry Worsley (Hiddleston), a devoted husband and father, a former soldier, a man of deep honor and sacrifice, but also a man deeply obsessed with adventure, manifesting in an epic journey crossing Antarctica on foot.”
Per Deadline, Hugh will also serve as the showrunner alongside Black Swan writer Mark Heyman on The White Darkness. The duo will also executive produce with Hiddleston. There is currently no word on the show’s release date, but with Hiddleston busy with Loki right now, we can assume The White Darkness will be his next project.
As for Marvel’s Loki, the show has been renewed for a second season, which was fairly obvious considering season one ended on a massive cliffhanger. However, there is a major reshuffling in the creative departments. Kate Herron, who directed all six episodes in season one, will be replaced by the duo of Aaron Moorhead & Justin Benson (Moon Knight, Synchronic). Michael Waldron (Heels, Doctor Strange 2) will return as head writer. Much of the star cast is expected to return, but the focus will be on Hiddleston this time around as his redeemed Loki tries to navigate his way around in a different universe.
Marvel and Disney are quite busy at the moment, so Loki fans might have to wait, but hopefully, Loki season 2 will be worth the time.
