While we’re still a ways away from the release of The Fall Guy, which isn’t expected to premiere until 2024, it’s already eagerly anticipated by fans of director David Leitch and actor Ryan Gosling. Adding to the hype is producer Kelly McCormick, who spoke with Collider about the upcoming film:
87North is a production company formed in 2019 by McCormick and Leitch. It’s well known for creating Nobody, Bullet Train, and Violent Night, the latter of which just released on Dec. 2. They’re unabashed action movies, not afraid of providing the viewer with some good old-fashioned violence, though the producer also hints at the “emotional impact” of the film.
“It’s awesome… we are having an absolute blast. Our full cast is here now, and we are in full-on. I just am so in awe of Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt and Winston Duke and Hannah Waddingham and Stephanie Hsu. I just feel so lucky that we ended up with such an extraordinary cast and incredible actors. It’s going to feel a lot like an 87North picture and a lot like a David Leitch movie – original, wildly inventive, and emotionally impactful. And I’m just really, really excited about it already.”

The Fall Guy Producer Reveals Why They Opted for Practical Effects
AGBO
Practical effects are something director David Leitch is very familiar with, having started out in the film industry by performing and coordinating stunts. The plot of The Fall Guy revolves around a stuntman who unwittingly becomes wrapped up in a conspiracy, so it’s something personal for Leitch, according to the producer:
McCormick also points out that practical effects have been slowly phased out in recent years in favor of visual effects. However, practical effects are far from unpopular, and the producer recalls that the 80s television series the film is inspired by, also titled The Fall Guy, did not have the technology for visual effects. So, the choice to rely on practical effects was not only a personal decision for the director but also an homage to the original, which McCormick refers to as “a series that a lot of stuntmen became stuntmen because of.”
“David coming from stunts, and telling a story about a stuntman who is coming into his own through having to investigate a crime… We’re really trying to do a lot of practical action on this. We always do, but in this case, it’s really big practical action. And it just feels like we’re paying homage to the stunt community and to, really, cinema and those of us who make the movies. And it’s sort of a love letter to the industry.”
The Fall Guy is scheduled to release in theaters on March 1st, 2024. It will star Ryan Gosling in the lead role, with co-stars including Emily Blunt, Winston Duke, Hannah Waddingham, and Stephanie Hsu. 87North and Universal Pictures will produce it, with the latter also serving as the distributor for the film.
