At what point can the fastest man on Earth stop outrunning his troubles? As of this moment, the answer to that question seems to be “never,” as Ezra Miller, the actor that portrays The Flash in the DCEU, continues to hold the role of the red-suited runner. However, even with the actor playing the role since 2016 with a cameo appearance in Batman vs. Superman, and a significant role in the 2017 Justice League film, there has still yet to be a stand-alone Flash project. What makes this all the worse is that two other heroes from the Justice League (Wonder Woman and Aquaman) have sparked their own stand-alone franchises that individually grossed over $1 billion.

So, why hasn’t The Flash gotten the same treatment? Well, sadly, the main reason seems to be issues stemming from the film’s star. Ezra Miller has gotten himself into a surplus of trouble over the past few years (with the public and the law), resulting in the film continuously being rescheduled. Keeping all of that in mind and realizing that DC is currently burning a lot of money waiting for one of their staple characters to get on the big screen, should DC just give the world a new Flash?

This certainly wasn’t the first thing that kept The Flash from getting off the ground, but it absolutely hasn’t helped. In 2022, Ezra Miller has already been arrested twice – once in March and then again in April. The March charges were for disorderly conduct and harassment. The April charges were the exact same when Miller reportedly lunged at a man playing darts and stole a mic away from a woman singing karaoke at a bar.

Now, neither of these charges are seen as particularly horrible in the public eye. But since Miller is a worldwide star and under a constant spotlight, his antics are given more weight than if a non-movie star had done the same thing. Being held to a higher standard in the public eye might not be a part of being famous that actors enjoy, but it’s still part of the life. With that in mind (and everything else Miller has done), DC could easily be forgiven for wanting to recast an actor that continues to get into trouble with the law, even if the legal issues aren’t particularly harsh as far as legal issues go for celebrities.

The Flash Keeps Pushing Back

While Ezra’s legal issues are something of a newfound problem for DC and Warner Bros. to navigate, it certainly hasn’t been the only issue with getting The Flash solo film off the ground. As already stated, Miller’s first cameo appearance came back in 2016, and he had a much more prominent role in the 2017 Justice League movie. After the conclusion of those projects, DC’s original plan was to release solo films of Wonder Woman in 2017, Aquaman in 2018, and The Flash in 2018. Two of those projects happened, and one did not.

According to reports, the 2018 standalone The Flash film got continuously pushed further and further back on the production schedule due to increasing dilemmas of creativity among the people putting it together. Now, nobody ever really named names, but several prolific directors have dropped out of the project, and Ezra Miller (the face of The Flash franchise) is still around. Putting two and two together gives audiences the answer that Miller may have had more than a few issues with the project’s directors. Now, this is technically just speculation, but for an established billion-dollar franchise to get pushed back more than half a decade (that isn’t named Avatar: The Way of Water), there’s probably some on-set drama behind the scenes.

Other Actors to Fill the Role

So, getting way ahead of ourselves, who could possibly replace Miller if DC did decide to recast the infamous superhero? Recent rumored reports (that have already been proven to be false) indicated that DC was interested in casting acclaimed actor Dylan O’Brien for the role of The Flash. But, again, those rumors have already been debunked. Of course, that doesn’t mean O’Brien wouldn’t be a perfect fit for the role.

Another option would be to bring in actor Grant Gustin since he plays The Flash in the DC tv show, and fans have already fully embraced him as the character. The only issue with that is it would probably confuse viewers and assuredly screw up the DC cinematic/televised timelines. Exploring further options, young actors such as Timothee Chalamet and Tom Holland are more popular and marketable than ever. Both could seamlessly fit into the role since they have experience with big-budget Hollywood films. However, Holland’s role as Spider-Man might be too iconic for him to switch from the MCU to the DCEU.

Regardless of what happens with the role, it’s conclusive to say that fans are running out of patience when it comes to getting a standalone Flash film. And Ezra Miller is running out of time on the benefit of the doubt.
