On Jan. 13, Sands’ family reported him missing after going for a hike near Mount Baldy. So far, efforts to find him have come up fruitless. Investigators were able to locate his car near the area where he was reported missing. Cops have also tried pinging his cell phone, and while that turned up activity that indicated movement on the first day, there hasn’t been any other traces found of Sands, physical or otherwise.

“There has been no new update or witness information about his whereabouts since then,” the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Public Information Officer, Gloria Huerta, said on Friday, a week after Sands’ disappearance, via BBC. “The air search is being resumed, but we have not been able to resume a ground search yet due to icy conditions and a threat of avalanches.”

Cops are also warning others about the dangers of venturing into the Mount Baldy area. In recent weeks, another hiker has turned up missing in the same area while one woman has died following a tumble down the mountain. It is true that the search has been limited to looking by helicopter in recent days, given the condition of the terrain, but cops also say there’s no hard deadline to suspend the search operations.

“It is extremely dangerous and even experienced hikers are getting in trouble,” a police statement states of the area.
