Do people want to see a sequel to The Goonies? Well, one person who really does is the creator of hit ABC sitcom The Goldbergs, Adam F. Goldberg, who has taken the time to write and pitch one. Appearing at Connecticut’s Terrificon 2022 (via Fandom Spotlite), The Goonies star Joe Pantoliano, who played antagonist Francis Fratelli in the original outing, revealed that the producer and writer Adam F. Goldberg pitched a Goonies 2 to the late legendary director Richard Donner.

The last few years have seen an emergence of legacy sequels, with Pantoliano explaining that Goldberg believes now is the perfect time for a Goonies 2, which would have been titled The Goonies II: Never Say Die. There have been whispers of a sequel to childhood favorite The Goonies for some time, and Pantoliano went to reveal that actual, real conversations regarding the subject have been had. With film figures as high up as Steven Spielberg.

“Apparently, he pitched Donner an idea — he would only show us the first three pages. That was the sequel version. I think, with the success of all of these sequel movies — Bad Boys for Life, Top Gun [Maverick] — for some reason, people really like going back and seeing these characters brought back to life. So I would hope we get to do another one with everybody.”

This is actually not the first we have heard of Goldberg’s idea for The Goonies II: Never Say Die, with the writer himself taking to Twitter back in 2020 to show off the first page of his script.

“All I know is, a while ago, we had a Goonie reunion. Over the years, occasionally, I’d run into [Goonies executive producer and story writer] Steven Spielberg and he would say, ‘We’re working on a script for Donner.’ And at one point, Donner actually called me like 10 years ago.”

Goldberg has referenced The Goonies multiple times throughout The Goldbergs and is clearly a big fan of the cherished adventure flick. Sadly, following the death of director Richard Donner last year, a sequel to The Goonies is now looking less likely than ever. However, Goonies star Corey Feldman has said that someone from the cast and crew could follow in the footsteps of Mel Gibson and his plan to helm another Donner sequel, Lethal Weapon 5.

While audiences and Adam F. Goldberg may never see The Goonies 2 come to light, a remake-esque Goonies project is coming to Disney+ and will follow a group of young, aspiring filmmakers who attempt to remake the beloved Richard Donner movie on a shoe-string budget.
