Maybe that canceled TV series about The Goonies getting recreated is going to end up happening after all. Previously, it was reported that Fox had ordered a pilot for a potential Goonies re-enactment show. The idea was that the show would follow a teacher and three students as they recreate the iconic movie from director Steven Spielberg. Ultimately, Fox declined ordering the pilot to series.

Behind the scenes, the team behind this Goonies re-enactment show have been working diligently to find another home for the project. Their prayers have been answered as the series has now been lined up at Disney+. Officially titled Our Time, Variety reports that the series will bring back the Donner Company and Spielberg’s Amblin TV to make this show happen at its new home.

“Sarah Watson worked nonstop to deliver this incredible script, we had our table read, and then the world shut down for COVID. So we came back many months later and finished the beautiful pilot, and it was an incredible cast, but unfortunately a little bit too young for Fox,” SAID Clancy Collins White, the exec VP and head of development at Warner Bros. TV. “And so we immediately swung into high gear and hit the town with it. We did not yet have anything in development at Disney+. It’s been another example of being able to carve a pathway where there wasn’t one by virtue of a great story, a great pilot, a great series. The deal has taken a while to make, but we’re really excited to be moving forward.”

Warner Bros. TV Group chairman Channing Dungey adds, “If something happens along the way, whether it’s a regime change, or a loss of interest in a concept or a change in programming strategy, we’re going to find a new place for a project to live and hopefully thrive. Looking at the track record that Warner Bros. has had in this space made me really excited to come in and be a part of that. One of the hardest things for me when I was on the platform side was having to say ‘no, this doesn’t fit with our needs, we don’t have room for this.’ Whereas here, if we fall in love with an idea, and we want to pursue it, there’s no limit to our passion.”

It’s unclear how much the concept will change when it’s retooled at Disney+. According to the original logline, the drama would follow Stella Cooper, a woman “carrying a heavy secret” who takes up work as a substitute teacher when she returns to her hometown from New York. When she meets three young students with big dreams of making it as filmmakers, she grows inspired and joins them with their efforts to develop an “impossibly ambitious shot-for-shot remake of one of their favorite movies - The Goonies.”

The death of Richard Donner seemed to spell the end of the rumors that The Goonies 2 would also be happening, though Corey Feldman has told us that the project just might still happen one day if the right people are involved. If this new show is a success for Disney+, it could only help the chances of The Goonies 2 getting made. Our Time doesn’t have an official release date at this time.
