The limited series The Gray House is moving forward at Paramount Global with accomplished Hollywood stars Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman attached. Deadline reports that a green light has been given to The Gray House, a six-hour Civil War spy drama series produced by Costner’s Territory Pictures along with Freeman and Lori McCreary’s Revelations Entertainment as well as Leslie Greif’s Big Dreams Entertainment. Costner will also executive produce while Rod Lake and Howard Kaplan will produce for Territory Pictures alongside Alex Kerr for Big Dreams Entertainment.
The Gray House follows three women who have been credited by General Ulysses S. Grant for helping the North win the Civil War. The series is written by Greif, Darrell Fetty (The Offer), and John Sayles (Lonestar). Oscar nominee Roland Joffe (The Killing Fields) is directing. The plan is for shooting to start this spring. From the Deadline report, a description of the story reads:
The Gray House Is Based on a True Story
Orion Pictures
“The Gray House is an untold true story of three amazingly brave abolitionist heroes of the Civil War, who just happened to be women," said Costner, who previously found great success with a Civil War-set story as the star of Dances With Wolves. “Having a passion for history, it’s always personally fulfilling to share richly layered stories about America’s unsung heroes. I’m delighted to join forces with my friends Leslie Greif and Morgan Freeman with whom I’ve had great success to produce this important, epic saga.”
“I’m thrilled to be able to partner with our friends and industry legends Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman,” added Paramount Global’s Chief Content Licensing Officer, Dan Cohen. “Their taste in material is second to none. Couple that with a chance to once again work with Leslie Greif, who Developed and Executive-Produced the Paramount+ series hit The Offer, and this is a project we are very much looking forward to bringing to a worldwide audience.”
An additional statement from Freeman and McCreary reads, “Morgan and I are thrilled to bring to life the story of Mary Bowser, who volunteered to be placed in the ‘Confederate White House’ (aka The Gray House), posing as an enslaved person. She was thought by everyone to be illiterate and so they spoke freely in front of her, and with her photographic memory, she was able to send battle and secret information to the Union Army and help turn the tide of the Civil War. Revelations is all about revealing truth and this is a truth that needs to be revealed!”
A release date has not yet been set for The Gray House.
