The new horror film The Invitation will take the throne at the domestic box office for the weekend, though it’s worth noting that this has been one of the slowest weekends at the movies in a long time. From director Jessica M. Thompson, The Invitation is a film about a woman who learns the dark truth about her family following her mother’s death. It stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Thomas Doherty, and Stephanie Corneliussen.
By the weekend’s end, The Invitation is pulling in a haul of $7 million at movie theaters in North America. That puts the film in the No. 1 spot, but at the same time, this is also the lowest-grossing weekend of the summer with all films pulling in around $53 million altogether. For what it’s worth, it’s still not the lowest-grossing weekend of 2022, as the weekend of Jan. 28-30 garnered less than $35 million.

In its third weekend in theaters, Bullet Train landed in the No. 2 spot for this weekend, pulling in $5.6 million for a total domestic haul of $78.2 million. Rounding out the top five are Beast with $4.9 million ($20 million total), Top Gun: Maverick with $4.75 million ($691.2 million total), and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero with $4.5 million ($30.7 million total). That also pushes DC League of Super-Pets down to No. 6 with a haul of $4.2 million.
Three Thousand Years of Longing Debuts at No. 7
MGM
Meanwhile, Three Thousand Years of Longing also made its debut this weekend, but it came up much shorter than The Invitation. This film will fall into the No. 7 spot by pulling in $2.8 million. Directed by George Miller and starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton, the film follows a British scholar who unleashes a Djinn from an antique bottle and learns about his story.
There was also another film released this weekend that failed to crack the top ten. Breaking, which stars John Boyega as a Marine vet who robs a bank while facing financial stress, is based on a true story and is directed by Abi Damaris Corbin. It had previously performed well at Sundance but doesn’t seem to be making much of a dent with its theatrical run.
