After the successful release of Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Netflix will delve further into the terrifying true tale of the cannibalistic murderer with the docuseries Conversations with a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes. In previous installments of the docuseries, serial killers Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy spoke about their crimes through their own voices, and this time, Jeffrey Dahmer is given the same treatment. The series will consist of three 60-minute episodes featuring interview recordings from Dahmer along with new interviews from various people involved with the case.

There will not be many family members of victims featured in new interviews, however. The director of the docuseries, Joe Berlinger, recently spoke with Entertainment Tonight about who would be featured in the doc. He confirmed that there wouldn’t be much new footage of victims’ relatives speaking about what happened, noting that the majority of those approached were understandably not interested in taking part.

“Most did not want to participate,” Berlinger said. “Most either did not respond or declined, and I can understand why.”

With that said, Berlinger said the docuseries treats the true story with respect to the families, insisting that it’s “responsibly told and sensitive to the victims.” Given the trauma that many family members still feel to this day, Berlinger also understands if none of them would want to watch the new series, but in any case, he hopes no one will take offense to how the story is told when it comes to the victims of the serial killer.

“I certainly don’t expect them to watch the show, but if they do, I hope they will feel like we treated their loved ones with respect,” he said.

A Netflix press release states that the goal of the docuseries is to shine “new light on the intersection of race, class, sexuality, and policing that gave rise to one of the most notorious murderers of the 20th century.” Because Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story was a scripted series that, while very accurate to the true story, takes some creative liberties, viewers may want to check out Conversations with a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes for a further understanding of what really happened. Conversations with a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes will start streaming on Netflix on Oct. 7, 2022.
