Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is still hoping and praying that he will one day return to tell more stories set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Speaking with Variety, Johnson described making The Last Jedi as the “high point” of his life, before stating that he would still love to helm his proposed trilogy. Check out what Rian Johnson said below.

The Last Jedi is now known for being one of the most divisive outings in the entire Star Wars franchise. And the abuse Johnson and the cast received from a certain section of the fanbase is well documented. Despite this, Johnson clearly still has a passion for Star Wars and hopes to eventually make a comeback and bring his previously announced trilogy to the big screen.

“Making Star Wars was the high point of my life and so I still, I pray to God I’ll be back there someday.”

This is not the first time Johnson has recently declared his desire to make more Star Wars. “I have talked to [Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy] about it and we’re still talking about it,” Johnson said of his potential spinoff. “I had such an amazing experience making The Last Jedi. It’s entirely a matter of scheduling. For me, putting this [Glass Onion] out and making the next one of these [Knives Out sequels] …the answer is I don’t know.”

While there will be plenty of Star Wars fans who hope never to see Rian Johnson return to the Star Wars series, there will equally be loads who cannot wait to see what he comes up with.

Rian Johnson Will First Return to the Whodunnit World of Knives Out

Before embarking on another adventure in a galaxy far, far away, director Rian Johnson will first return to the whodunnit world of Knives Out with the upcoming sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

The follow-up finds private detective Benoit Blanc invited to tech billionaire Miles Bron’s “murder mystery party” getaway on Glass Onion, his private Greek island. However, when someone turns up dead for real, Blanc must crack the case and discover who the killer is.

And the Knives Out franchise is where Johnson plans to stay for the foreseeable future, with the filmmaker saying recently that he plans to make Knives Out 3 his next project. “I had for a while thought that maybe I should do something else first […] But the God’s honest truth is, I had so much fun making this one, and the creative challenge of figuring out a third movie that’s completely different from both this one and the first one — right now, that’s the most interesting creative challenge to me,” he said. “So I might just dive in and see what we come up with.”

Featuring a stellar ensemble cast that includes Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Ethan Hawke, Dallas Roberts, and Jackie Hoffman, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will receive a one-week limited theatrical release on November 23, 2022, before landing on Netflix on December 23, 2022.
