There are a number of excellent characters from Naughty Dogs’ beloved post-apocalyptic video game The Last of Us that have yet to make their debut in HBO’s television adaptation. We’ve met our main characters Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), as well as some supporting characters such as Joel’s daughter Sarah (Nico Parker), his brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna), Tess (Anna Torv), and Marlene (Merle Dandridge). In the most recent episode, we were introduced to Joel’s friend Bill (Nick Offerman) and his partner Frank (Murray Bartlett).
Who else from the video game will we see next? Fans of the game will be looking out for their favorite familiar characters and luckily for us, certain characters have been confirmed to appear, including one from the DLC content and a main character from the second game. With that being said, let’s take a look at these characters still missing from the show.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Brothers Henry and Sam
Sony Interactive Entertainment
Along their journey to locate the Fireflies, Joel and Ellie cross paths with fellow survivors Henry and his younger brother Sam. The two are also trying to get to the Fireflies, where Henry believes they will be safer and his priority is to protect Sam. Although the brothers had previously been traveling with another group, they were separated from the others and are likely the only survivors. Sharing a common destination, the four agree to travel together. Being the same age, Sam and Ellie hit it off quickly and become friends.
After being chased down by the gangs, they become temporarily separated, but later Henry and Sam rescue Joel and Ellie from the river. Back together, they continue on their journey, battling infected and gangs alike. In the midst of a struggle, Sam is unknowingly bitten by an Infected. The next morning he has turned and attacks Ellie. Henry is forced to shoot his own brother and then, in his grief, takes his own life.
For HBO’s The Last of Us, Henry will be portrayed by Lamar Johnson, and Keivonn Woodard has been cast as Sam. We are looking forward to what the show has in store for these two and what if anything will be different from the video game with their story.
The Winter Antagonist David
Naughty Dog
After Joel is seriously injured, Ellie struggles to nurse him back to health. As she is out hunting for food, she meets a couple of men, one of them being a man named David. She has just shot a deer and agrees to trade the deer for some medicine for Joel. Little does Ellie know who David really is and what kind of threat he poses. Although she is weary of him at first and is able to keep the upper hand for a time, a pack of Infected find them and attack. Forced to work alongside him to survive, Ellie lets her guard down a bit.
David then reveals that it was his group of men that attacked Ellie and Joel at the university and David believes that it was fate that brought them together. He does, however, give Ellie the medicine and sets her free. Only to have her followed so that they can get to Joel too. They manage to capture Ellie and when she wakes in a cell at their camp, she discovers the horrifying truth that this group of survivors are cannibals and David is their leader. Recently it has been announced that David will be played in the show by Troy Baker.
Ellie’s Best Friend Riley
Before embarking on her journey with Joel and Tess, Ellie attends the Fedra military school. It is during her time there that she befriends a girl named Riley. The two become so close that they develop a romantic relationship that is revealed in The Last of Us: Left Behind. Storm Reid has been cast as Riley for HBO’s adaptation. Although she doesn’t appear in the core games, she is mentioned in the first game by Ellie.
In the DLC Left Behind, we find out that Riley believed in the mission of the Fireflies and abandons Ellie to join their cause. When Riley is about to be relocated to another area, she visits Ellie in the middle of the night. The two take off together until they make their way to an abandoned mall, where Riley has some surprises for Ellie. She apologizes to Ellie and wants them to have one last night of fun. However, the night goes awry when a group of zombies attacks them and both get bitten. They decide to wait it out together until they turn, but only Riley turns and Ellie finds out that she is immune when nothing happens to her.
Abby From The Last of Us Part II
With HBO’s confirmation of the show for a second season, we will surely be seeing Abby soon. She may even make her debut towards the end of season one. Regardless, she is both a loved and hated character from the second game. Gamers play as Abby throughout the second game, making her a main character of the game as well as Ellie’s antagonist.
Their stories become intertwined from the events of the first game when Joel saves Ellie from the Firefly’s attempt to make a cure from Ellie. The surgeon who was preparing to operate on Ellie was actually Abby’s father whom Joel kills. Abby then makes it her mission to hunt down Joel and kill him to avenge her father.
Abby’s appearance for the second season is guaranteed, although there has not yet been any confirmations about who will be cast for her role.
