The Last of Us made quite an impact when it debuted on HBO and HBO Max last week. While the arrival of a new episode could have seen an almost inevitable drop in the high audience rating, that doesn’t seem to be the case as the show has continued to hold a pretty impressive 96% audience approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes and equally substantial 9.4/10 rating on IMdB. While there are a small number of viewers who are not on board with the series, logging complaints about there not being plenty scenes of zombie attacks, or still unhappy with casting, their 1 star ratings are not making too much difference to the show’s overall performance.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Being based on the popular video game, there is a continued expectation that at some point The Last of Us will suddenly fall into the trap of so many previous video game movies that have failed to engage new audiences and alienated those who have invested time in the game. Surprisingly, that has not happened yet, and if anything the second episode of the series has only increased the praise being piled on the show.
Whether it is how well the series captures the game, or how it has delivered something that gives the zombie genre a hefty kick after the fatigue of The Walking Dead’s final seasons, there seems to be plenty to like about the show whether you are familiar with the games or not. Currently, the series is still on track to be not only the best video game adaptation ever, but also one of the best TV shows ever.
The Last of Us Incorporates Game Play Into The Story Like No Other Video Game Series
HBO Max
Survival horror video games have certain aspects that are seen again and again, but when games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill have been translated to the big and small screen as movies and TV shows, there usually is one thing missing. That is the feel of the game being played out and the jeopardy it brings to the story.
The Last of Us brings to life both moments of tense exploration, and even tenser face-offs against the deadly mutant creatures that are on the tail of Joel, Ellie and Tess. The creatures are not taken out easily with one bullet. There are multiple shots fired until the weapon is spent and has to be swapped out for another, just like when playing the game. Of course, as has been pointed out in some reviews, the only thing missing from the series are the multiple deaths experienced by those attempting to complete the game.
With the series only gaining in both viewership and positive ratings, The Last of Us is already one of HBO’s most successful shows ever on a number of fronts. Whether it can continue to keep the majority of viewers onside throughout the rest of its run is something that will be revealed in the coming weeks.
