The trailer for the long-awaited HBO original series, The Last of Us, has finally been released. The series, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, is set for release sometime in 2023. The pair play Joel and Ellie, a duo connected through the harshness of the world they live in, as they are forced to endure brutal circumstances and ruthless killers on a trek across post-pandemic America. The HBO show is based on the video game created by Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog, and PlayStation Studios, which won Game of the Year, Best Design, and Best Narrative at the 14th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards. The game was initially released in 2013, with a sequel arriving to fans in 2020.

In the trailer, we see Pascal as he navigates his post-apocalyptic reality, eventually uniting with Ellie (Ramsey) as they begin their journey, which should span most of the first season. We get a glimpse at what the survivors are dealing with in the first frame of the teaser, as a sign reads: “Report Signs of Cordyceps Infection: Coughing, Slurred Speech, Muscle Spasms, Mood Change.” The series’ aggressive antagonists, which resemble zombies, are people who were once humans before being mutated by a deadly fungal infection. They will undoubtedly be an ever-present danger throughout The Last of Us, in addition to the other humans who inhabit the harsh world. The Last of Us Isn’t Your Average Zombie Story
HBO
The zombies, or infected as they’re known in The Last of Us, are a significant part of the story within the video games. However, the ultra-aggressive enemies aren’t what makes the award-winning series so great. Instead, Joel and Ellie share an inspiring yet heartbreaking story as they travel across America, forming a bond that is one of the strongest in all media. As fans learn the intricacies of their characters, they will find themselves falling in love with the pair, praying for their survival throughout the series.
The Last of Us show seems to be staying very close to the source material, as specific locations perfectly mirror its video game counterpart. This is no surprise, with Neil Druckmann signing onto the series as a creator, director, and lead writer. Craig Mazin joins him in his duties, with his previous work including Chernobyl for HBO, which won 10 Emmys.
The Last of Us stars Gabriel Luna, Nick Offerman, Merle Dandridge, Murray Bartlett, Jeffrey Pierce, and Anna Torv alongside Pascal and Ramsey. The trailer reveals the series’ official 2023 release date, and fans hope The Last of Us arrives early next year.
