The latest trailer for HBO’s The Last of Us has officially been released, giving viewers another look at Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the lead roles of Joel and Ellie. The series is based upon the video game franchise of the same name, adapted to the small screen by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin alongside Neil Druckmann, the creator of the original video game series.

The show will closely follow the plot of the games, with Joel being hired to transport Ellie across the country in search of a cure, as Ramsey’s character is immune to the zombie infection that plagues the rest of the world. In addition, the trailer provides a glimpse at several characters from the game series, including Bill (Nick Offerman), Theresa ‘Tess’ Servopoulos (Anna Torv), Riley Abel (Storm Reid), Henry (Lamar Johnson), and many more. The Last of Us Expectations Are High

The Last of Us is adapting one of the most beloved video games of all time, meaning long-time fans have high expectations toward the HBO series. Luckily, the cast and crew behind the project seem to respect the source material, particularly with creator Neil Druckmann on board. Actor Murray Bartlett, who plays Frank in the series, recently discussed the show, saying The Last of Us features “one of the best hours of television I’ve ever read.”

Frank was only mentioned in the original video game series, meaning his character will have a greatly expanded role in the TV show. Gabriel Luna (Bernie), Merle Dandridge (The Last of Us game), Jeffrey Pierce (The Last of Us game), Melanie Lynskey (Togetherness), and Graham Greene (The Green Mile) will also appear in the series. The Last of Us arrives on HBO Max early next year on Jan. 15.

“The scripts that I had to work with, one particular script is one of the best hours of television I’ve ever read. It’s beautiful. It’s beautifully written. There are these zombie creatures in it, but it’s tender and it’s human. I think it’s gonna be really special. I haven’t seen any of it yet, but I’m really proud of the work we did and I think it could be really, really wonderful.”
