The latest poster for the upcoming adaptation of The Last of Us invites us to look into the light when we find ourselves lost in the darkness—good advice when trying to survive a post-apocalypse. The poster finds lead stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey standing front and center, with the former taking the latter across the United States in the hopes of finding a cure to the plague that has left the world broken. From the Emmy award-winning creator of Chernobyl, Craig Mazin, and the creator of the acclaimed video game on which the series is based, Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us is a new HBO Original series. The show follows The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal as Joel and Game of Thrones star Bella Ramsey as Ellie.

The Last of Us takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey. An unlikely pair connected through the harshness of the world they live in, Joel and Ellie are forced to endure brutal circumstances and ruthless killers on a trek across post-pandemic America.

The Last of Us Will Land on HBO in January

While Pascal and Ramsey will be the two characters central to the story, The Last of Us will also introduce a vast array of characters alongside them as they attempt to survive the daunting task of traversing the U.S. amid all manner of monsters and violent gangs of survivors. “It is covered in clickers and spores, and the elements of Alberta, and we’re having an amazing time. It’s totally harrowing,” Pascal said of the HBO series. “And I don’t know if we’ll make it, but it’ll be completely worth it. It is amazing. And I’m having an amazing time. I don’t know if I’ll make it.”

The ensemble cast includes Gabriel Luna (Terminator: Dark Fate) as Tommy, Joel’s younger brother, and a former soldier; Merle Dandridge, who will reprise her role from the video games as Marlene, the leader of the revolutionary militia group known as the Fireflies; Anna Torv (Fringe) as Tess, Joel’s smuggling partner; Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation, Devs) as Bill, an expert survivalist; and newcomer Keivonn Woodard as Sam, a deaf, artistic child who is being hunted by violent revolutionaries along with his brother Henry, played by Lamar Johnson (The Hate U Give).

The rest of the supporting cast includes Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus) as Frank, a survivalist living in an isolated town with Bill; Euphoria star Storm Reid as Riley Abel, and Nico Parker (The Third Day) as Sarah, Joel’s daughter. The adaptation will also feature roles for several voice actors from the video game, such as Jeffrey Pierce, who voiced Tommy, Ashley Johnson, who voiced Ellie, and Troy Baker, who voiced Joel.

The Last of Us is scheduled to debut on January 15, 2023, and is a joint production by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Naughty Dog, The Mighty Mint, and Word Games.
