An apparent leak has seemingly revealed the premiere date for HBO’s highly anticipated adaptation of The Last of Us. Several users of the HBO Max app have claimed that The Last of Us is now listed with a release date of January 15, 2023. While HBO has not yet made an announcement, it sounds like we won’t have to wait too much longer to delve into the post-apocalypse alongside Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.
“A preview of the post-apocalyptic drama series based on the critically acclaimed video game. Premieres Jan. 15,” the listing on the HBO Max app now reads. There have been several anecdotes from users (and an image courtesy of Twitter user @Knoebelbroet) regarding this release date, so it may be time to mark in your calendars.

The Last of Us will follow Joel (Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor and smuggler tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States. While this leaked release date has yet to be officially confirmed, we do know that the first season of The Last of Us will consist of ten episodes written by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, and will bring to life the hugely popular video game of the same name.
The Last of Us Season 1 Will Adapt the First Video Game
HBO
Developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, The Last of Us was first released back in 2013 and finds players as Joel, a smuggler tasked with escorting a teenage girl, Ellie, across a post-apocalyptic United States. Players must use firearms and improvised weapons, as well as stealth and other tactics, in order to defend themselves against hostile humans and cannibalistic creatures infected by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus that has spread across the nation.
The Last of Us was met with critical acclaim and is now considered to be one of the best video games of all time, with critics and players alike praising its in-depth narrative and characterization. Elements that, based on the recent trailer for The Last of Us, will make the transition from the pixels of the video game to the small screen with ease.
The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann has since revealed that the first season of the series will adapt the first game, and though he has stated that it will make some changes along the way, fans should not be too worried. “Things sometimes stay pretty close. It’s funny to see my dialogue there from the games in HBO scripts,” Druckmann said back in March 2021. “And sometimes they deviate greatly to much better effect because we are dealing with a different medium.”
The Last of Us is a joint production by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Naughty Dog, The Mighty Mint, and Word Games and stars Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, Merle Dandridge, Anna Torv, Nick Offerman, and Storm Reid among others. The Last of Us will premiere on HBO and HBO Max in 2023 and, if this leak is indeed accurate, we don’t have very long to wait.
