With the release of the upcoming HBO series The Last of Us rapidly approaching, fans of the original game series are eager for any last-minute details about the new show. Recently, during a press event for The Last of Us, ScreenRant got the chance to speak with The Last of Us star Gabriel Luna who plays Tommy Miller on the upcoming series. While chatting with the outlet, Luna hinted that the new HBO series has some surprises in store for his character.

In the game series, Tommy is the younger brother of Joel Miller and is considered a supporting character in The Last of Us and The Last of Us 2. Tommy first appears at the beginning of the game when the world is falling into chaos. When the game picks up years later, it’s revealed that Tommy has been separated from his brother. While the horrors of their world have toughened up Joel, his brother, Tommy, continues to hope that the world can change for the better.

Gabriel Luna Says That Tommy Fans Will Get To See the Character “In His Natural Habitat”

Gabriel Luna said, “There’s some great moments that of course, I can’t tilt our hand on some of those moments that happen later in the season, but early on, you already get to see Tommy in his natural habitat, so to speak, be a part of the family, be with his family, his very small, tight-knit family and to be alive in a world we all recognize before it all comes tumbling down. And that’s something you don’t necessarily get to see in the game.”

Luna went on to say, “When you meet Tommy, he’s already in the throes of the action. And in our show, we get to show you the calm before the storm. And that was exciting and very, very really fun to explore and to do with just a few lines and a few moments together as a family the heavy lifting of making our audience fall in love with the Millers. And we needed it. We needed those moments. And that was really, really exciting for me to explore. And then beyond that, there’s a lot coming.”

The actor continued, “But what I will say to that is that Tommy is someone who’s about people, community and life and living life and loving life. And there’s certain elements that you need to have a full life as a man and then to feel that you are not just surviving, not just existing, but prospering and thriving. And so we get to explore how he tries to gain those things.”

The Last of Us premieres on January 15th on HBO.
