The Last of Us Has Been a Long Time Coming
HBO
The original video game version of The Last of Us was released in 2013. As an instant hit, there have been plans ever since to adapt the story in live-action. Previously, the plan was for Sam Raimi to produce a movie adaptation co-written with Neil Druckmann. That project ultimately fell through, but Druckmann would continue his efforts to adapt the game, leading to the HBO series version co-created with Craig Mazin.
As with the game, the series follows Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, two survivors who form an unexpected bond during their journey across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. The series also stars Gabriel Luna, Anna Torv, Merle Dandridge, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, Storm Reid, and Melanie Lynskey.
The Last of Us premieres on HBO and HBO Max on Jan. 15 at 9 p.m. EST. You can see some more of the fan tweets about the premiere below.
