In The Legend of Korra, Avatar Korra has faced many dangerous threats, accomplished many incredible feats, and become an amazing Avatar; though she wouldn’t have been able to have so many accomplishments without her allies, loved ones, and newfound family, Team Avatar. Korra’s team consists of four true core members (Mako, Bolin, Asami, and herself) with a plethora of temporary members and allied forces, two of which truly stand out as honorary core members and will be included in this article. While many fans will argue that Aang’s Team Avatar from Avatar: The Last Airbender is superior to Korra’s, none of our favorite characters from the beautifully-indulgent preceding series will be included.
Since its formation, Korra’s Team Avatar has been at the forefront of keeping the peace, and fighting the good fight for Republic City, as well as the Avatar World as a whole. While Team Avatar has had a handful of soft splits from one another in order to follow their own passions, careers, or businesses, they remain strongly connected as any real family would. All of Team Avatar’s members are capable in combat and have a solid head on their shoulders, but it is together that they truly stand out as an incredibly formidable group of heroes. From defeating irrational separatist groups to defeating countless foes of varying degrees of threat and even conquering mental instabilities, Team Avatar may be the purest form of justice Republic City has ever seen.
The world of Avatar is amazingly diverse, creates deeply immersive life relationships, and offers a truly special experience for audiences. The Team Avatars may be the very best part of the series, with their true friendships, love and care for each other, and those in need. Now that Netflix has purchased rights to parts of the Avatar Television Series Franchise, as well as Avatar Studios taking off, we can only hope to see different iterations of Team Avatar and other installments in the fantastic world of Avatar. With that being said, let us dive into the top six Team Avatar members from The Legend of Korra, ranked!
6 Asami
Paramount Media Networks
Asami isn’t a woman to be trifled with, regardless of the fact that she is a non-bender. Asami is definitely an amazing fighter, but where she truly stands out is with her impeccable knack for creating and inventing. Like her father, Asami is very formidable with her technological advances, as well as her ability to form a strong company from the ground up. While she is the lowest on this list of Korra’s Team Avatar members, her skills in building and utilizing machines and electricity are unmatched, and her resourcefulness is second to none.
Asami has also excelled at creating important relationships with the likes of Varrick, a rich inventor and entrepreneur in the series, and she shows time and time again that she is more than just a pretty face who can kick butt. She is a very suitable and important member of Korra’s Team Avatar on many levels, including on an emotional level, as she has been a sturdy point for multiple characters when they have been in need.
5 Bolin
Bolin is the younger brother of Mako and a formidable earthbender. We first meet him in season one of The Legend of Korra as a member of a probending team, The Fire Ferrets, and he is an incredibly lovable character. He is the son of an Earth Kingdom citizen father and a Fire Nation citizen mother, and is the reigning comical relief for the series. While he is gullible at times, his intelligence shines through his ignorance many times, as he is a character that provides surprise “Aha” moments throughout the series. While he has a lot of potential, Bolin is ranked five on this list due to him being younger, less experienced, and frankly childish.
Even though metalbending doesn’t come as easily to him as it does to many other earthbenders in the series, he has shown an adept ability to lavabend, which is by far the least mastered subsection of earthbending. With his growth throughout the series, it isn’t a stretch to estimate he will surpass many of his colleagues and predecessors alike as he continues to find himself after the series’ end.
4 Mako
Mako, the older brother of Bolin, is an incredible character and honestly resembles Prince, now Fire Lord, Zuko, in more ways than one. His temper and stubbornness may be a hindrance to him, but that kind of comes with being a great firebender in the world of Avatar. He makes up for his poor personality traits with the strengths of being a natural leader, being a more than excellent firebender, and his unwavering intuition paired with a will that does not break. Mako is an excellent member of Team Avatar and has proved himself to have a strong moral compass on a number of occasions.
Mako has also been shown to have very strong detective skills and is a great policeman; he joined the force after hanging up his probending uniform for good. Some of his best feats are attributed to his excellent investigative work, and his skills in combat, matched with his versatility, got him the job of being the newly appointed Earth King’s personal bodyguard. Another skill that should be noted is his ability to lightningbend and redirect lightning, as very few firebenders achieve this power.
3 Lin
As the first “honorary” core member of Korra’s Team Avatar, Lin Beifong is an excellent earthbender, who specializes in metalbending. Like her mother, the great Toph Beifong, she is hardened, stubborn, and the chief of police in Republic City. Lin has a very strong sense of justice and is dedicated to upholding peace and order throughout The Legend of Korra. Lin can be a bit rough around the edges, even openly harsh at times (remind you of anyone, Toph, we’re looking at you), though she doesn’t hesitate to jump into action and fight for the good and safety of Republic City and its citizens.
Lin, although she started off seeing Korra as an inexperienced brat of an Avatar, became an incredibly important ally for Avatar Korra, and her missions. While they often had the same end goal in mind, Avatar Korra and Lin have become very close, and throughout time, Korra’s missions have even led Lin to confront some of her past regrets and demons. Lin is an essential character in the story of The Legend of Korra, with her stance on good versus bad, as well as her pull in Republic City’s government. Without her, Team Avatar’s success rate would have severely dropped.
2 Tenzin
Tenzin, the youngest son of Avatar Aang and Katara, the only one to inherit Aang’s airbending abilities, and a father of four children (three of which are confirmed airbenders), is the other “honorary” core member of Korra’s Team Avatar. Tenzin is one of the most vital allies to Korra and her quest to keep balance in the world of Avatar. Tenzin is an airbending master, a great spiritual figure, and an uber-wise man; he has been Korra’s airbending master, main mentor, and close friend since she left the Southern Water Tribe for Republic City. He is kind of a father-figure to Korra, who has assisted her on many missions and deeply cares for her safety.
Aside from his masterful airbending abilities and remarkable grasp of life’s meanings, Tenzin has raised the future of the Air Nation. His children are bright, skillful, as well as having strong personalities and characteristics. His oldest daughter, Jinora, is very exceptional in her bending abilities, but more so in her natural spiritual connection. While Tenzin practices a very passive and passive-defensive lifestyle, he is still one of the most formidable individuals in the entire Avatar world. A key member in the eyes of the Republic City’s President, the Republic City people, and Korra’s Team Avatar.
1 Korra
Taking the number one spot on this list is Avatar Korra herself, a real no-brainer. Korra has been a natural Avatar since an extremely young age, showing her innate abilities in waterbending, earthbending, and firebending from before she was 12 years of age. Since her adolescence, Korra has become one of the most skilled fighters in the traditional ways of earth, fire, and waterbending, only to boost her skill set after joining the Fire Ferrets Probending Team, acquiring modern forms and techniques. She has also become very adept at a subsection of waterbending called spiritbending, which allows its wielder to actively maintain order versus corrupt spirits by turning them back to their natural positive state.
In her story, Korra has had setbacks in abundance and has had to dig deep inside herself to persevere through them. From struggling with airbending to temporarily losing her bending abilities, to becoming paralyzed after being poisoned, beaten, and mentally broken by a foe, Zaheer. She even lost connection to her past Avatar lives and struggled to regain spiritual attachment to the spirit world and the Avatar State. Despite all of her ailments, misfortunes, and temporary losses, Avatar Korra continued to beat the odds and, through any setback, she returned stronger than her previous self.
Korra has mastered all four elements (as well as many subsections), persevered in the face of adversity, and evolved into one of the most well-rounded Avatars of all time. Korra, with the help of her Team Avatar, has maintained balance in the world, kept peace throughout nations, and inspired increased change during a new era in the world of Avatar.
