As well as being the creative force behind the camera on many popular movies such as Iron Man, The Jungle Book and Elf, Jon Favreau has become one of the most integral cogs in Lucasfilm’s recent Star Wars success on Disney+. Having created The Mandalorian, it was not a surprise that Favreau was also involved in the return of the fan-favorite bounty hunter Boba Fett. However, The Book of Boba Fett, which debuted in December 2021, didn’t quite receive the universal praise of The Mandalorian, with many criticisms being aimed at changes made to the character from his original villain role in the Star Wars Saga.

Boba Fett was last seen in Return of the Jedi, as he was seemingly sent to his death in the sarlacc pit following a brief altercation with Han Solo. However, as revealed in The Mandalorian’s second season, Fett survived his assumed death and his return then continue in The Book of Boba Fett. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Favreau likened the new version of Boba Fett to changes made to Don Corleaone’s character in The Godfather movies, as well as recalling co-producer Robert Rodriguez’s comparison between the bounty hunter and Conan the Barbarian. He said:

“You think about Don Corleone. There’s a tremendous amount of restraint because he knows that to be sustainable, there has to be [peace.] You don’t do well unless there’s some political balance, because if you keep going to the mattresses, nobody’s earning. You think about what things are off-limits. Don Corleone wasn’t just doing everything to line his pockets as he got later into his career. You look at De Niro, in the flashbacks in The Godfather: Part II, as he’s walking down the streets. He’s seen as somebody who’s actually creating, someone the people respect because of the way he conducts himself.

There’s lots of different ways to run an empire. There’s the Sonny Corleone way, there’s the Michael Corleone way and then there’s the Vito Corleone way. We would talk to Robert about Conan. Conan starts off as a young warrior and then ages up through the books until he’s Conan the King. So, how is Boba the crime lord going to be different, knowing what he knows, than what he would’ve been when he was a younger man? I think he’s just wise. … He’s also a much older character because now we’re after the original trilogy. He’s at a different point of his life, having experienced what we had seen in all the previous films.”

Boba Fett’s Story May Not Yet Be Over In The Star Wars Saga

While The Book of Boba Fett was seen as a limited series, and in many cases was referenced as “The Mandalorian Season 2.5”, it does not mean that we have seen the last of the bounty hunter yet. While there is a clear crossover with The Mandalorian, which could continue in the Pedro Pascal-led series when it returns, there are also other interconnected series coming such as Ahsoka that could also have a part for Fett to play in them.

While Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has made it clear recently that there is about to be a big resurgence to come in Star Wars theatrical movies, that does not mean we will see any kind of slowdown in the production of Disney+ shows. With Obi-Wan Kenobi set to premiere in just over a week as one of the most anticipated Star Wars projects ever, there is a lot more to come from the galaxy far, far away in the near, near future.
