Marvel’s Monica Rambeau gained some unexpected superpowers during the events of WandaVision, and now the character will be teaming up with Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel in next year’s The Marvels. However, as yet, the newly powered-up super-heroine doesn’t have her all-important “made-up” name, as Peter Parker would call it, in the MCU. That may have changed as a new solo comic arc has possibly given away the cosmic name that Rambeau will use in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
For a number of years, Monica Rambeau’s alter-ego has gone by the name of Spectrum in the world of Marvel Comics, but a new five-issue limited comic series coming in December appears to suggest a new name, as it comes with the title of Monica Rambeau: Photon. The timing of the comic is certainly a strong sign that the new name is one of many that the character has used in her time as a Marvel Comics character, but there are also other reasons to suggest a tie between the Photon name and existing MCU lore.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
2019’s Captain Marvel introduced Brie Larson’s titular heroine and her best friend Maria Rambeau. During the events of that movie, as well as the introduction of a young Monica Rambeau, who would then be played as an adult by Teyonah Parris in WandaVision, one scene revealed a little piece of information that could be the connection to Monica’s new name. Photon was the callsign of Maria Rambeau’s fighter jet, and with her mother now deceased, it would not be unexpected for Monica to take on the name in tribute to her.
The Marvels Will Crossover With Many MCU Stories
As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand, the number of opportunities for characters to cross over into other stories grows all the time. With there have been some MCU projects that still stand apart from the overarching story narrative, The Marvels looks to be a movie that fans will need fans to really delve into a number of Disney+ shows to fully appreciate.
The Marvels originally started out simply as Captain Marvel 2, but over time it has become so much more. Currently, the movie, which hits cinemas next summer, continues storylines from Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, WandaVision, and Ms Marvel. There is also now a strong belief that the film will also be directly linked to the events that transpire in the upcoming Secret Invasion series, which is now set to be released early in 2023 and features the return of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and focuses on the Skrull invasion of Earth.
Of course, the Skrulls were first introduced in Brie Larson’s debut as Captain Marvel and have since also appeared briefly in post credits scenes of WandaVision and Spider-Man: Far From Home, so it would be logical to expect them to also appear in The Marvels. Additionally, Jackson’s Fury has been confirmed to appear in the movie, bolstering the expectation that the events of Secret Invasion will play some part, however small, in the storyline of The Marvels. All will be revealed when The Marvels hits cinemas on July 28, 2023.
