The Marvels was officially announced as a sequel to Captain Marvel soon after the movie’s release in 2019. Although plans for the film began so long ago, it was produced to be a crossover with projects that haven’t even premiered yet. The movie will see the revival of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and will include Disney’s newest addition to the MCU: Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani). There’s certainly a lot to look forward to. It’s a movie that will take a particular corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and expand it, so it’s more front and center. Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) will no longer be off in the far reaches of the galaxy, helping other planets all the time. She’ll be front and center with her own dedicated crew.

Many things will be brought back to the MCU that we haven’t seen in a while. With the return of Nick Fury, will we see a new, more underground version of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Or will he remain a lone operator, working only with a few close friends? What role will S.W.O.R.D. play? And how will Marvel’s Secret Invasion be involved? The potential excitement generated by crossovers alone is astounding. And that doesn’t take into account all the possibilities brought in by Captain Marvel’s own world of comics. So, here are just a few reasons to get pumped for The Marvels.

The Marvels’ Connectivity

     Marvel Studios

The Marvels showcases a line of heroes who haven’t been in the spotlight too often. Each of these stars seems to have just one origin story and maybe a few cameos when other characters in the Marvel Universe have already had several sequels. And Monica Rambeau’s (Teyonah Parris) origin only took up ten minutes of WandaVision. This group of heroes deserves more attention, especially considering how prominent they are in the comics. Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful heroes in the Universe, and seeing her kick some extraterrestrial butt is always a joy. Plus, most of us haven’t seen Nick Fury in a more significant role in a while. And I think we all want to see Samuel L. Jackson back in the MCU.

This movie will also take a closer look at the MCU’s newest hero: Ms. Marvel. Having quite the level of renown in the comics, Ms. Marvel is sure to play a significant role in Phase 4 and the upcoming Phase 5. Her involvement also officially confirms the notion that The Marvels will be a cross-title venture. This means that, like many other Marvel films nowadays, the events of this movie will impact the rest of the MCU in exciting ways. Bisha K. Ali, the writer for Ms. Marvel, had this to say in The Hollywood Reporter about Kamala Khan’s connection to The Marvels:

The MCU Possibilities

     Marvel Comics

There’s much more to explore, given the connection with the people, narrative, and opportunities to advance the story. Despite the very little we know about the movie’s plot, it will have some connection with Secret Invasion, an event in the Marvel Universe where the Skrulls, a race of shapeshifting aliens, have been quietly infiltrating the highest levels of Earth’s government and superheroes.

There’s no release date for the series, but hints have been planted that it will premier sometime in late 2022 before The Marvels comes out next year. And even though the main event will occur before The Marvels, it’s bound to have lasting effects on whom we can trust and who’s really a Skrull.

The film will also likely include bits of the Kree/Skrull war, a thousand-year conflict that we got a peek at in Captain Marvel. Now that Nick Fury and Captain Marvel are caught up in the war, there is plenty of room to introduce alien characters into the MCU, including Hulkling, a super-Skrull that eventually becomes part of the Young Avengers.

There are also plenty of actors who have positions in the film that have yet to announce their roles, and some fans believe Nova may be part of the movie. Even though he is typically a character in his own series, we’ve seen the Nova Corps in Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Doctor Minerva may return as well, even though the actor (Gemma Chan) already has taken a dual role as Sersi in Eternals.
