Several newly released images from upcoming sci-fi action sequel The Matrix Resurrections tease many of the mysterious new faces that will litter Keanu Reeves’ journey back to the truth, with an action-packed shot confirming that Reeves’ The One will throw down with Jonathan Groff’s curious character. As well as the image of the almighty kick struck down upon Groff by Keanu Reeves’ Neo, the images also give us a glimpse at Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the all-new Morpheus, Jessica Henwick as Bugs, and a few other, currently nameless freedom fighters, each of whom add to the ever-growing puzzle that is The Matrix Resurrections.

While very little has been confirmed regarding Jonathan Groff’s character, it is expected that he will step into the role of Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith, thus becoming the new archenemy opposite Keanu Reeves’ hero, Neo. This newest image certainly suggests that this will be the case, with the fight between the warring pair looking like something akin to Neo and Smith’s epic showdown in the first The Matrix, which saw Neo realize his destiny as The One.

Jonathan Groff has since revealed some backstage secrets surrounding his and Keanu Reeves’ superpowered sparring saying, “[Keanu] taught me so much about the agreement of two people to hit each other, but not hurt each other. When our fight was over, I felt deeply connected to him in a physical way.”

The Matrix Resurrections will throw audiences back into the iconic digital world, picking up twenty years after the events of The Matrix Revolutions. Neo is now living a seemingly ordinary life as Thomas A. Anderson in San Francisco where his therapist prescribes him blue pills in order to dampen his destiny’s call. While neither he nor Trinity recognizes each other, Morpheus soon reappears, once again offering him the red pill and reopening his mind to the world of the Matrix.

Produced, co-written, and directed by Lana Wachowski, The Matrix Resurrections stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith, each of whom will reprise their roles from previous movies in the series. They will be joined by a host of new characters, including Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Christina Ricci, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who has since confirmed that he will be playing a younger version of Neo’s former mentor, Morpheus.

While there is still a whole lot that remains unknown about the long-awaited sequel, writer David Mitchell, who co-wrote the script alongside director Lana Wachowski, has teased the movie’s ambition saying, “I cannot tell you what this film is about, but I could explain what it is not. It’s certainly not yet one more sequel, but something autonomous that contains however the three Matrix that preceded in a really ingenious way. It’s a very beautiful and weird creation. It also achieved a couple of things that we do not see in action films, meaning it subverts the rules of blockbusters.”

Thankfully, audiences don’t have to wait too much longer to unwrap The Matrix Resurrections, with the movie scheduled to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures on December 22, 2021, when it will also stream digitally on HBO Max for a month beginning on that same date. These images come courtesy of EW.
