The first teaser for Mike Flanagan’s The Midnight Club was just released as part of Netflix’s Geeked Week. Adapted from the young adult horror novel of the same name by Christopher Pike, The Midnight Club tells the story of seven terminally ill teens that reside at Rotterdam Home. Every night, the group secretly meets at midnight to tell spooky stories. In the teaser, we see the teens gather around a table for their routine while they toast: “To those before, to those after; to us now, and to those beyond; seen or unseen; here, but not here.”

One night, the young adults make a pact that when one of them dies, they will attempt to contact the others from the great beyond to confirm the existence of spirits. Viewers familiar with Flanagan’s other Netflix series (The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass) will definitely expect atmospheric horror.

Mike Flanagan and Netflix

Flanagan is best known for creating Netflix horror series The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass. The Midnight Club is not the first book adaptation that Flanagan tackles: The Haunting anthology was based on classic books by Shirley Jackson and Henry James. After the success of The Haunting of Hill House, Flanagan joined collaborator Trevor Macy as a partner for Intrepid Pictures. The two signed a deal with Netflix to produce more series for the streamer.

Thanks to that deal, The Midnight Club is not the only upcoming Flanagan series we can expect on Netflix. In October 2021, it was announced that Flanagan would adapt Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher. Confirmed cast members for the upcoming series include Mark Hamill, Katie Siegel, Carla Gugino, and Henry Thomas. It is expected to premiere in 2023.

Before the popular Haunting anthology and Midnight Mass, Flanagan worked on horror films, including Oculus, Hush, and Ouija: Origin of Evil. There is currently no talk of a third addition to The Haunting anthology.
