It’s the end of the line for The Mosquito Coast. After two seasons, it’s been revealed that Apple TV+ has canceled the show and won’t be moving forward with season 3. The show originally premiered on the streamer in 2021 with season 2 hitting Apple TV+ in November. The streamer debuted the season finale, which now serves as the series finale, on Jan. 6.

In a way, the story will move forward, as the series essentially served as a prequel story leading up to the events of the original books that the story is based on. The series is directed inspired by the original book of the same name by Paul Theroux with Neil Cross developing the show for Apple TV+. There was still room to have potentially gone forward with another season before fully bridging that gap, as Theroux told Deadline before the cancelation where season 3 could go if The Mosquito Coast gets renewed.

“If there’s a third season, it would segue into the book itself, and the movie’s search for a utopian community,” he said. “But we don’t know at the end of the second season if Allie is part of this, or if Margo is on her own. That’s the cliffhanger.”

He continued, “You can’t put a wall around the utopia you build, and people from the outside move in on them. That happened in the book, the movie and if there’s a third season, it would be about being invaded by people from the outside, looking to take advantage of them.”

Justin Theroux leads the cast as Allie Fox in the series adaptation. The show also stars Melissa George, Logan Polish, Gabriel Bateman, Ian Hart, Ariyon Bakare, Natalia Cordova-Buckley, and Daniel Raymont. Justin Theroux executive produces with Bob Bookman, Alan Gasmer, Peter Jaysen, Ed McDonnell, and Rupert Wyatt.

“As the author of the book, I’m fascinated by what they’ve made of it,” Paul Theroux also said, hoping to see a third season just to get more content from the cast and crew. “I’m an exec producer so I was tuned into each episode, but I was still on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen. They’ve done such a great job writing and directing, and the acting is terrific. I’m hoping that it goes into a third season just to round it off.”
