Alexander Skarsgård towers over the supporting cast of The Northman on the latest poster for The Witch director Robert Eggers’ upcoming Viking revenge epic. A three-word description that should have many a movie fan salivating. Released courtesy of the official Twitter account for The Northman, the poster also gives us another look at the stellar cast, including Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk and Willem Dafoe.

Alexander Skarsgård must conquer his fate in The Northman, which will drop audiences at the turn of the 10th century in Iceland, and centers on a Viking named Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård), who witnesses the murder of his father, King Aurvandil, at the hands of his uncle, Fjolnir. With his mother, Queen Gudrun, now captured, Amleth flees his native land, but not before declaring his revenge on those who have wronged him. The Northman can be summed up perfectly by Amleth’s oath: Avenge father. Save mother. Kill Fjölnir.

The Northman is Due for Release in Theaters Next Month

The Northman promises to be a gloriously violent revenge outing, with director Robert Eggers coating this Viking legend in his own brand of menacing horror. Eggers has no plans of making a documentary though, with the filmmaker recently offering some insight into how he has approached this historical epic. “[Historical accuracy] It’s not important to filmmaking, at all really,” the filmmaker said regarding his desire to recreate the Viking era. “And you can make a great period story without being accurate – you know Coppola’s Dracula is one of the best-designed movies in my opinion but it’s not accurate at all. But this is something that I like, for whatever reason. It excites me.”

Making The Northman has certainly left its mark on leading man Alexander Skarsgård, who has undergone a transformation of hugely muscular proportions in order to portray this merciless Viking warrior. “It’s a tough act to follow,” the actor said when pondering where he may go next following the release of The Northman. “A lot of stuff that I might have said yes to a couple of years ago, I’m just not that keen on doing anymore. I feel a bit lost. I don’t know where to go from here. This experience… it definitely changed me. I think it changed most people who were on that mountaintop.” After making such a profound impact on the actor, The Northman is sure to make just as much of an impression on audiences when it hits theaters next month.

The Northman is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 22, 2022, by Focus Features.
