A newly released red band trailer for the Viking epic The Northman finally gives us a taste of the bloody and brutal violence that will be enacted by Alexander Skarsgård’s revenge-fueled warrior. The trailer offers a glimpse at what is sure to be just one of many battles, as Alexander Skarsgård cuts a beastly figure, smashing through a rival army with sword in hand and vengeance in his heart.

Released courtesy of Focus Features, this latest footage from The Northman sees blood spraying galore as we are treated to our first real insight into the brutality and viciousness that director Robert Eggers will bring to his Viking flick. The Viking has not been at the center of the silver screen for some time, and clearly Robert Eggers and Alexander Skarsgård have reveled in bringing these warriors back for this haunting historical action drama.

The Northman is scheduled for release later this week and has so far been met with glowing reviews from critics. Our own Julian Roman made mention of the R-rated violence on display saying, “The Northman is a spectacularly graphic film. Robert Eggers revels in butchery. The realistic swordplay leaves little to the imagination. Open wounds spurt blood. Skulls are smashed to brain pulp. Heads literally roll. This is not an endeavor for children or anyone remotely squeamish.”

Reviews have praised the direction, cinematography, and performances, with another reaction saying, “I’ve been a huge fan of Robert Eggers for years, but THE NORTHMAN is truly his masterpiece. Brutal, fearless, & audacious, it feels like the kind of cinematic epic we don’t see very often anymore. It’s a ferocious & stunning work of art & Alexander Skarsgard rules.”

Avenge father. Save mother. Kill Fjölnir. Alexander Skarsgård must conquer his fate in The Northman, which will drop audiences at the turn of the 10th century in Iceland, and centers on a Viking named Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård), who witnesses the murder of his father, King Aurvandil, at the hands of his uncle, Fjolnir. With his mother, Queen Gudrun, now captured, Amleth flees his native land, but not before declaring his revenge on those who have wronged him. Returning in later life now a hulking master of war and violence, The Northman promises to be one of the best cinematic experiences of the year.

Starring alongside Alexander Skarsgård as Amleth, the wronged Viking prince, The Northman features an impressive supporting cast that includes, Nicole Kidman as Queen Gudrún, Amleth’s mother; Claes Bang as Fjölnir, Amleth’s uncle and Aurvandill’s brother; Anya Taylor-Joy as Olga; Björk as a witch known as the Seeress; Willem Dafoe as Heimir the Fool; Kate Dickie as Halldora the Pict; Gustav Lindh as Thorir the Proud; and finally, Ethan Hawke as King Aurvandill, Amleth’s father and Fjölnir’s brother.

The Northman had its world premiere in Stockholm at Rigoletto Cinema on March 28, 2022. The movie began theatrical release in some countries on April 13, 2022, and is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 22.
