The hit sitcom The Office is filled with relatable and lovable characters that fans have grown an undying attachment to. Michael Scott, Pam Beasley, Jim Halpert, Dwight Schrute, and the rest of the Dunder Mifflin Scranton Branch, all have special places in our hearts, with their uniquely endearing quirks, as our favorites grow into more complex and charming characters over the course of the show. Yet, throughout the show’s nine seasons, there have been characters that aren’t so beloved, to which many took an immediate disliking to. Characters who get in the way of true love, characters with power, and characters who are just downright crude, insensitive, and sexist (looking at you, Todd Packer). So with that in mind, here are the most disliked characters in The Office.

9 Season One Michael Scott

     NBC Universal Television Distribution

Michael Scott is without a doubt one of the best characters in TV history; however, he didn’t start the show in such high regard. He was a copy of David Brent, with his incompetence, insensitivity, and many politically incorrect comments, that are just downright cruel. From holding a completely racist diversity day meeting, to being very inappropriate to Amy Adams’ purse saleswoman, season one Michael lacked any of his charming personality, and held a naive incompetence, creating an irritatingly insensitive character.

8 Roy Anderson

Roy was in the way of Jim and Pam’s true love, and for that, we hated him. But more importantly, Roy wasn’t particularly the nicest to Pam, having been engaged to her for three years with no attempt to actually plan the wedding, as well as never showing an interest in Pam’s passions. Similarly, Roy displayed a lot of violence and his scary anger issues irritated fans. Thankfully, Roy and Pam eventually called off the wedding, which led to Jim and Pam finally getting together a season later.

7 Charles Miner

Charles Miner isn’t necessarily an annoying character. In fact, he is a fairly competent manager, but his lack of humor, harshness to his employees, and more importantly, the fact Michael had us hating him from the start caused our dislike for him. Played brilliantly by Idris Elba, Charles serves as the polar opposite to Michael, who causes a huge disruption at the Scranton branch, forcing Michael to quit and start his own paper company, the Michael Scott Paper Company.

6 Andy Bernard

     NBC

The “Nard-dog” started off as a pretty egotistical, and irritating character who was forced to go to anger management after punching a hole in the wall at the Scranton branch. Later, he came back and became an oddly intriguing and down-to-earth character, who became a fan favorite from seasons four to seven. However, when Andy became the manager of the Scranton branch, we as fans took another dislike to him, as his ego came back, as well as him disregarding Erin, completely. At his best, Andy is among the best characters, but at his worst, we can’t help but hate every time he is on-screen.

5 Jan Levinson

As Michael’s main love interest for the first few seasons of the office, Jan Levinson was at first, not too annoying, yet as the show went on, Jan was a character that audiences didn’t necessarily connect with. Jan treats Michael with zero respect, forcing him to work two jobs, to sleep on a tiny foot stool, and forces Michael to convince his rich friends to invest in Jan’s failing scented candles business. Michael and Jan’s relationship is incredibly uncomfortable for the show’s characters and its audience, which was most on display in the cringe-worthy episode, “Dinner Party”.

4 Todd Packer

Todd Packer was a character we were never meant to like or connect with, due to his horrifically sexist and insensitive comments, who did technically serve his purpose in the show. While fans heard his voice in the show’s pilot, we never really meet him until season two, in the hilarious, yet politically incorrect “Sexual Harassment” episode, where he made an “explosive” and of course, offensive entrance into the show. Packer and Michael are strangely great friends, yet Packer has no regard for Michael and constantly pokes fun at Michael and Michael’s fellow co-workers, with his terribly offensive comments. Sure, Packer is a character we hate, but with David Koechner in the role, we kind of loved to hate him. Ultimately, Packer would be a character that certainly wouldn’t fly today.

3 Brian Whittle

The documentary crew of the show are often referred to, and although not by name, we see characters signal to them and make their presence known. However, it was truly weird seeing the camera crew and more specifically the boom operator, Brian Whittle in the frame. Not only does it feel weird, but Brian has also had a crush on Pam for years. Brian seems like a nice guy who even stood up for Pam as he fought a warehouse worker who tried to attack Pam, causing them both to get fired. Pam then visits Brian to confide in him about Jim and Pam’s marriage, when he then proceeds to admit his feelings and tries to split Jim and Pam up.

2 Cathy Simms

Cathy Simms came into the show on its eighth season as a replacement for Pam while she was on Maternity leave. Yet, it wasn’t long before she started making flirtatious advances towards Jim, even after he constantly kept refusing her advances. Cathy quickly became irritated as fans of the show were ecstatic over Jim and Pam finally getting together, and after all those years of waiting for that, we can’t stand anyone who gets in the way of that. Mostly, it was how she never gave up, that got so annoying, and when some of the staff went to Florida, Cathy’s obsession with Jim escalated as viewers shouted at their screens. Jim was then forced to bunk with Dwight, and after the Florida trip, Cathy thankfully left the Scranton branch for good. So long, Cathy!

1 Deangelo Vickers

Usually when Will Ferrell plays a character, we can’t help but love them, yet Deangelo Vickers is perhaps the most annoying and worst boss in the world, that even Will Ferrell couldn’t make likable to viewers. Deangelo was unfunny, rude, awkward, and all-in-all, a plainly terrible substitute for Michael. After Deangelo took over the Scranton branch was well and truly when we missed Michael, who had left only episodes before.
