The Academy Award nominations are out for this year’s ceremony, and while this isn’t exactly a big shocker for those who saw the acclaimed film, The Power of the Dog was one of the heaviest hitters. It scored a dozen total noms, with lead star Benedict Cumberbatch going up for Best Actor for his lead role in the film as Phil Burbank. This is the second Best Actor nod for Cumberbatch, who was previously nominated for 2014’s The Imitation Game.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cumberbatch admitted how the film’s accolades has him feeling “giddy,” though he also feels humbled and proud to see this success. The actor also reflected on the journey of the film from its conception to now getting so much attention at the Academy Ward.

The Power of the Dog also earned director Jane Campion a nomination for Best Director with the film itself scoring a Best Picture nod. Benedict took some time to praise Campion for her work on the movie as well, explaining how he knew he was a part of something special when he first saw her final cut.
Meanwhile, Cumberbatch’s co-stars are also getting some recognition. Kirsten Dunst is up for Best Supporting Actress while both Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Cumberbatch spoke about how happy he is to see his friends and co-stars getting nominated as well.

The Power of the Dog has a good chance of cleaning house at the Academy Awards. It’s up for several major awards, as noted above, and the film probably won’t be going home empty-handed. Will it emerge as Best Picture with Cumberbatch snagging Best Actor? That remains to be seen. Other nominations the film is up for include Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Sound, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Production Design.
Cumberbatch has a great shot of winning this time, though he does face some harsh competition. The other Best Actor nominations include Javier Bardem for Being the Ricardos; Andrew Garfield for Tick, Tick… Boom!, Will Smith for King Richard, and Denzel Washington for The Tragedy of Macbeth.
The Academy Awards will air on ABC on March 27, 2022.
