Following on quickly from seemingly confirming that yes, Jon Bernthal will return as The Punisher in a revival series on Disney+, Rosario Dawson has walked back her comments stating that she is not to be trusted. Taking to Twitter, Dawson, who starred as Claire Temple in several of the Netflix Marvel shows, including Daredevil and Luke Cage, clarified that she had merely heard of The Punisher revival from a fan.

“I can’t be trusted…!,” Dawson begins in the tweet. “Getting intel from fans during signings is iffy apparently. My bad. I get excited. Confirmation is key when you’re told what you want to hear…” The actress can hardly be blamed for getting overexcited about the prospect of Jon Bernthal once again donning the skull-emblazoned vest as The Punisher, with most Marvel fans hoping to see the character follow in the footsteps of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and be folded into the MCU.

While appearing at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, Dawson got pulses racing when she seemingly revealed that rumors of The Punisher’s return are all true. “I found out yesterday that The Punisher was happening again, so I feel like it’s my second chance, because it was the only one of the shows that I wasn’t in, and I love Jon Bernthal,” Rosario Dawson said of the possibility of her character appearing alongside Frank Castle. “So, let’s all make it happen collectively, guys!” Sadly, it was all too good to be true, with Dawson’s clarification taking The Punisher revival from confirmed back to speculation.

New The Punisher Series Rumored to be Announced at D23

The latest rumor surrounding The Punisher claims that the Marvel antihero will indeed make a comeback, with Jon Bernthal set to reprise the title role. The rumor goes on to claim that the project will be officially announced at this year’s D23, and while the series will debut on Disney+, it will be rated TV-MA — meaning that Frank will still be able to ply his violent trade.

This is far from the first time that a rumor has circulated claiming that The Punisher will be brought back and enter the MCU fray. One such rumor has claimed that the character would star in his own movie, while another claimed that Frank Castle would appear in a series on Hulu. But, with Charlie Cox now confirmed to be returning as Daredevil in not only the likes of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Echo, but also his own standalone series Daredevil: Born Again, things are looking promising for Jon Bernthal and his stellar iteration of Frank Castle AKA The Punisher.

Introduced during the second season of Daredevil before branching off on his own adventure in The Punisher back in 2017, the series follows Frank Castle as he embarks on a violent vendetta as a vigilante, using lethal methods to fight crime and avenge his slaughtered family. The series, along with the rest of the Netflix/Marvel roster, was canceled after two seasons in 2019.

The first two seasons of The Punisher are now streaming on Disney+.
