Netflix has announced The Redeem Team, a new documentary coming to the streaming platform on Oct. 7, 2022. The doc comes from the International Olympic Committee and Netlix as the two collaborate for the first time for this “riveting and nostalgic celebratory look” at Team USA’s Olympic Men’s Basketball victory in 2008. It is also the Olympic Channel’s first time producing a film exclusively for a global audience. Partnering up with the IOC has allowed Netflix access to never-before-seen archives, including basketball footage from the past 70 years of Olympic history.
The official logline for The Redeem Team is as follows:
Jon Weinbach (The Last Dance, The Comedy Store) directed the film, which is produced by Greg Groggel and Diego Hurtado De Mendoza. LeBron James served as an executive producer alongside Maverick Carter, Jamal Henderson, and Philip Byron of UNINTERRUPTED. Other exec producers include Weinbach, Frank Marshall, Mike Tollin, Dwyane Wade, Mark Parkman, Mary Byrne, and Yiannis Exarchos.

From The Dream Team to The Redeem Team
The name of “Redeem Team” is a play on the 1992 team which has been dubbed the “Dream Team.” That original team included big names from that era of the NBA such as Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone, and Magic Johnson. The Redeem Team was led by team captain Kobe Bryant with some of the other names on the roster including LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, and Jason Kidd.
“The Redeem Team represents the very best of what the Olympics are all about,” Mark Parkman, GM Olympic Channel Services, said in a statement. “This film will bring viewers directly inside that team and the Olympic Games Beijing 2008 by showcasing the personality and dynamics of a special group of superstars who came together as one to reclaim basketball supremacy on the biggest stage in sports.”
Dwyane Wade, who executive produced the doc in addition to actually playing on the Redeem Team, added: “In 2008, I played with heroes of mine, all stars, friends and future teammates. Outside of winning and showing the world that we were still the most dominant, our other big challenge was changing the perception of what everyone thought about the NBA and USA Basketball! I’m excited for everyone to get an opportunity to go behind the scenes and see all the work that went into this iconic team — The Redeem Team!”
The Redeem Team will start streaming globally on Netflix on Oct. 7, 2022.
