In the series, Sauron will still be a physical presence as he gradually rises to power. Elrond meanwhile (played by Hugo Weaving in The Lord of the Rings movie series and by Robert Aramayo in The Rings of Power) will slowly evolve over the series, beginning as a more open, upbeat elf before becoming the much more cynical, stoic character that audiences will recognize.

The Rings of Power Will Introduce Audiences to the Second Age
“Elrond, we know from the Third Age, has a pretty bleak view on humans,” said Payne. “He says, ‘Men are weak’ because he’s seen the foibles of humankind. In some ways the Third Age is almost post-apocalyptic Middle-earth. The elves have one foot out the door…. We’re going to watch as Elrond goes from optimistic to a bit more world-weary.”
Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.
