Although rumors of Superman’s Henry Cavill flying in for an appearance at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con floated around faster than a speeding bullet, that did not happen. In fact, it’s been reported that the actor is in the U.K. busy filming season 3 of the fantasy drama The Witcher. The British star helped launch the DCEU debut in 2013’s Man of Steel, but unlike Justice League members Aquaman, Batman, The Flash, and Wonder Woman, Superman was not confirmed to appear in any upcoming DCEU titles. That’s not to say Warner Bros. doesn’t have any future Superman plans or projects in development.

Meanwhile, when Black Adam star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was asked who would win a fight between Superman and his titular character, the 50-year-old replied:

Needless to say, the answer drew loud boos from the Cavill-loving audience.

“That’s a great question… don’t threaten me with a good time, cause I’m going to answer that question. Well, I will say, as you guys know, because we’re all in deep with this mythology, and it’s been an age-old question of who would win a fight between Black Adam and Superman. Pound for pound, they’re pretty close. I guess it probably all depends on who is playing Superman; I’m just going to say that. I’ll leave it at that."

Naturally, Twitter users weighed in with one posting:

As for The Rock, he also gushingly told ComicBook.com’s Brandon Davis,

“This answer smells recasting so hard. I’m done hoping. Just give me a new Superman movie and a new actor asap.”

Black Adam filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra has confirmed that Superman nor Shazam would be appearing in the project. He explains:

“I will say this. I will say that Henry is a buddy, and he is a phenomenal Superman. He is a phenomenal Superman and Henry Cavill is the Superman of our generation with respect to the other Supermans of the past. Every time I see him, we have some tequila and I say ‘This guy is Superman. My longtime business partner Dany Garcia has been a passionate advocate for Henry Cavill and his career for a very, very, very long time."

It is entirely possible that the studio may not feel the need to announce Cavill’s involvement or non-involvement at the moment or even have something bigger than a Comic-Con panel in mind. Fans will just have to continue to wait.

“Our movie is an original story. By the time the movie ends, he doesn’t know who Shazam or Superman is… He has to adapt to why he is here, what the world is about."
