Even with some reviews from critics that were less than flattering, Black Adam is a big success. The film has opened to more than $67 million at the box office, marking the highest opening weekend domestically for a movie starring Dwayne Johnson. The critics were not overly thrilled with the film, which landed with a rotten rating of 40% at Rotten Tomatoes, but the good news for The Rock is that filmgoers disagree. With more than 2500 opinions garnered, the film has debuted with a 90% audience score, and Johnson is touting this praise with a post on social media.
“This phenomenal 90% AUDIENCE SCORE for Black Adam is so gratifying for so many reasons,” he said, noting now he’s been slowly working on this project for 15 years. “THANK YOU for all so much for all the love and support. In the end, the only thing that matters to me is sending the people home happy. And that’s what I’ll always fight for.”

In his review of the film, our own Julian Roman predicted fans would enjoy the film by writing, “Genre haters can criticize the film as a bloated CGI spectacle devoid of a substantive plot. It never explains how he speaks English. Don’t walk into Black Adam expecting The Batman’s depth or plot virtues. It works as a blockbuster action flick with eye-popping effects. Fandom will be foaming at the mouth for the hinted sequel. Black Adam may be the toughest guy from Earth…”
Will Black Adam Have a Future in the DCEU?
Warner Bros. Pictures
The film’s rotten rating at Rotten Tomatoes isn’t ideal, but the odds of Black Adam getting a follow-up film seem very high. A post-credit scene teases big things to come for the character in the DCEU, and while a sequel hasn’t been announced by the studio at this time, The Rock says he’s actively working on plans on the next movie.
“We’re working on ‘what’s next’ as I type this,” The Rock said on Twitter in response to a fan praising the movie. “Exciting times. Stay tuned.”
Dwayne Johnson has also promised that fans will see more of Pierce Brosnan’s Dr. Fate after the character was getting a lot of attention on social media from filmgoers saying he stole the show. Meanwhile, Johnson has also teased upcoming crossovers with other powerful superheroes in the DCEU, such as battles with Shazam and Superman. Black Adam actor Aldis Hodge has said his hope is to see a trilogy of films leading up to a war between Johnson’s Black Adam and the Man of Steel. In any case, the film’s producers have promised that news on a sequel will be coming soon.
Black Adam is now playing in movie theaters.
