The Sandman creator Neil Gaiman has revealed his desire to see a spinoff centered on Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine. After waiting decades upon decades for a live-action adaptation of The Sandman, it sounds like Gaiman is now more than ready to expand on the recently released first season, telling Variety that he is ready to tell the story of Johanna Constantine, Morpheus, and the rest of The Endless “for a long time to come."

Referring to the third episode of The Sandman, Dream a Little Dream of Me, which introduces Coleman as a slightly altered version of the DC occult detective John Constantine, Gaiman heaped praise on the actress before expressing his enthusiasm for a spinoff series. The spinoff would potentially see Johanna Constantine battle all manner of demons and wreck other people’s lives. Sounds like classic Constantine.

“Anybody who has seen Sandman Episode 3 has sidled over to us at some point or other in the last six months and said, ‘Do you think there’s any possibility that we could do a Johanna Constantine show with Jenna Coleman?’ And, oh my God, she’s a star and you just want to see her going through battling demons and destroying other people’s lives. So that’s in there, too. We can keep going on this for a long time to come.”

Known best for roles in Doctor Who and The Serpent, The Sandman finds Jenna Coleman upping the cynicism to star as Johanna Constantine, with the actress portraying two versions of the character across time. Much like The Sandman source material, Coleman plays both the eighteenth-century ancestor Lady Johanna Constantine and the present-day Johanna, with changes being made to John Constantine due to various rights issues.

The Constantine character has been hugely popular among DC fans since being introduced in Swamp Thing #37 way, way back in 1985, and no doubt The Sandman fans would love to see Coleman given a chance to lead a standalone story. While we wait and see whether Johanna Constantine returns for her own adventures, John Constantine is still set to receive his own show on HBO Max.

Kirby Howell-Baptiste’s Death Could Also Be Given a Spinoff Series

A Constantine spinoff is not the only spinoff idea posited by Neil Gaiman, with the author also revealing that Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death could also be given their own show. Something which would come easy thanks to there already being books centered on this particular member of The Endless.

Based on the seminal comic book series by Neil Gaiman, The Sandman follows Morpheus, the king of dreams and one of the seven Endless, who is captured in an occult ritual in 1916. After being held captive for 106 years, Dream finally escapes and sets out to restore order to his realm, known as The Dreaming.

“It might be great to go off and do one of those as a sideline.”

Starring an ensemble cast that includes Tom Sturridge as Morpheus AKA Dream, Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, Patton Oswalt as Matthew the Raven, Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer Morningstar, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, and David Thewlis as John Dee, The Sandman is now available to stream on Netflix, and has been hugely popular with both critics and audiences alike.
