Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble’s The Sex Lives of College Girls season two finale left us with a handful of questions and cliffhangers that we already can’t wait to get resolved. And the good news is that they will be! The Sex Lives of College Girls has been renewed for season three, with all four roommates returning. Well, three of the four returning to Essex; Bela returning for season three, but with her talk of transferring schools, we aren’t yet quite sure where.

One of the biggest bombs dropped at the end of season two was Kimberly’s kiss with Canaan after she went with him as his date to his awards benefit. Canaan downplayed the award, as any humble king in his position would, but after he received the award, Kimberly gave him the praise he most definitely deserved. She also read between the very thin lines, noticing the clear romantic and sexual tension with her Sips coworker, and took her chance in that iconically romantic scene to close out the season two finale.

Kimberly had been holding back out of respect for her roommate, Whitney, but what she doesn’t know going into season three is that Whitney, unfortunately, witnessed that fateful kiss between her roommate and her ex-boyfriend firsthand. In a perfect world, Whitney will forgive Kimberly, and Kimberly and Canaan can explore their When Harry Met Sally friends-to-lovers arc guilt-free. In a realistic world, it will be a battle between love and loyalty, with Kimberly at the helm.
After Leighton’s inevitable breakup with her near-twin Tatum, the door for Alicia has been opened once again. From what we saw between Alicia and Leighton on the back end of season two, there does seem to be some lingering feelings, especially with Alicia’s party being the cause of the demise of Leighton and Tatum’s relationship. Now that Leighton is out to her parents, Alicia’s reasoning for breaking up with Leighton back in season one is no longer a problem. With Tatum out of the picture, and not to forget Leighton and Alicia’s kiss, the two of them officially getting back together would be a fantastic kickoff to season three.
At this point, it seems like Bela is out of people who are on her side. With the way she betrayed Eric, the way she handled The Foxy’s feature in The Essex View magazine, and her grades slipping so low that she has to look into transferring, things are not looking up for Bela to say the least. While Bela has found herself in this position through no fault but her own, it’s hard not to root for her come season three. Ideally, Bela will come to her senses and right her wrongs both with Eric and The Foxy, but if not, we can at least hold out hope that she’ll get her bearings back academically and avoid transferring.
Who Should Return for the Next Season
HBO Max
Noticeably absent from season two was Leighton’s fratty brother Nico. After getting expelled from Essex at the end of season one, it’s no surprise that he had a lesser role in season two. Nico was dearly missed, though, and with rumors of his return for season three, it is all but expected that we’ll at least get a Nico update this season.
With the way Bela treated Eric towards the end of season two, it’s still anyone’s guess whether we’ll see much of him come season three. Eric deserves only the best, given his ginormous heart and adorably geeky charm. Bela did him pretty dirty with the whole Dan O’Connell situation (though Eric did sort of start it) and a strong redemption arc for their relationship seems both tangible, and hopeful, if still unlikely. If the two of them don’t rekindle their love in season three, at the very least, in the eyes of most fans, Eric should get some sort of happy ending.
Kimberly’s newfound spark with Canaan left many wondering what is to come of Whitney’s love life in season three. Of course, it seems that Canaan is off the table, but what about hunky chem nerd Andrew? Their “relationship” was certainly dicey, to say the least, and even though they are technically broken up by the end of season two, their chemistry — no pun intended — is undeniable. It’s unclear what is to come of Kimberly and Whitney’s friendship, but one thing’s for sure, and that’s that the two of them both have found themselves in a pretty sticky love triangle (trapezoid?). While we can pretty much be sure that we’ll see Canaan back in season three, fingers remain crossed with regard to Andrew, assuming he can get his act together by the start of sophomore year and win his girl who wasn’t actually his girl back.
HBO Max has not yet announced an official release date for season three, but given the trends of seasons one and two, we can hope for a season three launch towards the end of 2023, and that could not come soon enough!
