Though they’ve recently come out with a new movie, Variety has revealed that Jen and Sylvia Soska are back at it again with their next project. Titled Unseen, it will be a psychological, sci-fi thriller. As is usually the case, with only a few exceptions, the Twisted Twins will write and direct the adaptation. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre producer Ted Field has boarded the project as well.

Set in 1970s Boston, Unseen will follow a couple who wakes up one day to discover that they can’t see. They also soon find that everyone else has been rendered blind as well. Their only hope is Ada, a woman who was previously blind herself but now has had her sight restored. However, they soon realize that something else is in the darkness with them.

“Unseen is an experiential horror film that places the audience in a Kafkaesque dilemma where they wake up in a world of unknown terrors they can only hear since their sight is gone.”

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Unseen is based on the audio-only video game BlindSide, created by Aaron Rasmussen and Michael T. Astolfi, which simulated what it’s like being blind. Instead of using their eyes, players must instead explore their environment using what they hear. According to Astolfi’s website, BlindSide won the Most Innovative Award in the 10th Annual Games for Change Festival in 2013, was a finalist in IndieCade 2012, and was nominated for two awards from the 2012 Brazilian International Game Festival.

More on the Making of Unseen

Field’s production company, Radar Pictures, will produce the film, while Film Mode Entertainment will handle global rights. Previously, Film Mode collaborated with the Soskas on their 2019 remake of Rabid, which was their reimaging of David Cronenberg’s horror film of the same name. Already, the company has launched the title at AFM in Los Angeles, where they screened a presentation reel on Halloween.

“As lifelong gamers, we have always wanted to have the opportunity to adapt a video game into a feature film experience. Breaking new ground by exploring a thriller narrative within science fiction has given us the ability to elevate our story like never before. We are excited for fans to see something completely new from us,” said the Soska sisters.

Epstein will executive produce Unseen, while Field will serve as producer alongside Maria Frisk, Michael Napoliello, and Alex Power for Radar Pictures and Twisted Twins Productions. The casting for the feature film is currently underway.

“Audiences have already shown enormous appetite for sensory deprivation thrillers and Unseen is going to raise the bar even higher in this high concept and suspenseful story. With the phenomenal talent of the Soska Sisters at the helm and Ted Field guiding the team forward, we now we have a hit on our hands. Not only are we thrilled and honored to be working with Ted, Sylvia and Jen, we just can’t wait for audiences to embrace this thillride as much as we have,” said Film Mode president Clay Epstein.
