Warning: The contents of this article contain potential spoilers for the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie! When Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie got pushed back to April 7th, 2023, something slipped through the cracks, and it might have given away a big detail about the film! Normally, when the hot family movie comes to theaters, a fast-food chain will likely have a corresponding tie-in targeted to the child audience. But for fans of Mario and the gang, they’ll be getting access to the mushroom kingdom a little early. Toys for the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie are available now at participating McDonald’s locations, and fans have already pointed out a character that was conveniently hidden from the trailer.

As far as McDonald’s toys, these are a pretty standard collection. You get Mario in a pipe, Bowser with aflame, Toad in a cart, Donkey Kong in a barrel… but wait, who is that blue character? If you’re a fan of Mario, or have at least played the 2007 Nintendo Wii game, Super Mario Galaxy, you’ll recognize that as a Luma! For a Luma to appear on a toy tie-in is a big deal. Not only does it confirm that the Mario Galaxy characters will make appearances, but they will potentially play a major role in the story!
Mario in Space?
Super Mario Galaxy follows the titular plumber as he travels into outer space in order to, you guessed it, save Princess Peach after she is kidnapped by Bowser. What sets Mario Galaxy apart from other 3D platformers in the Mario franchise was its unique gameplay experience, having Mario launch from planet to planet, each with a unique setting, layout, and theme. As Mario goes on his quest, he meets and ends up getting the help of Princess Rosalina, a strange princess who lives in a great observatory inhabited by her Luma companions. Since her debut, Rosalina quickly became a fan favorite among the Mario gang. She has made several appearances as a playable character in other Nintendo titles such as the Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart, Mario Golf, and Mario Party series.
“There’s a Huge Universe Out There, With A Lot of Galaxies…”
Rosalina from Super Mario Galaxy
While we can’t know for certain what the little blue Luma will bring to the Super Mario Bros. Movie until the film actually releases, there is room for predictions from both the trailer and game lore. In the trailer, we already see glimpses of the various kingdoms in the Mario universe, and Peach makes a dreamy mention of “a lot of galaxies” that need protecting. We also see Mario and Luigi falling through a long pipe in the clouds. Meanwhile, in Mario Galaxy, the Lumas grant Mario certain abilities, tokens, or even a little boost! Blue Lumas in particular turn into “Pull Stars” which, when activated, can pull Mario towards it and help him across long gaps in the vacuum of space!
Combining the hints of the trailer with this lore, could we have just gotten our main launching point for the film? The trailers clearly hint that Mario and Luigi were yanked from their world and in the middle of Bowser’s takeover. Could this mean a Luma was the one who picked out the duo to save the kingdom? That seems entirely possible. It might also be worth noting that Nintendo and Illumination wouldn’t want to leave out such a popular character as Rosalina from the film entirely, or in the very least have her on the table if they wanted to do a sequel.
Regardless of how this little Luma shows up on screen, one thing is for sure. Fans of a certain galactic princess will have more reason to rush to theaters in April when the Super Mario Bros. Movie warps on the big screen April 7, 2023.
