The third season of the hit Netflix series, The Umbrella Academy, is scheduled to arrive sometime this year. There isn’t a specific release date announced by the streaming platform just yet, but that does not mean we don’t have some other information. As massive fans of this show, we have gathered all the essential updates about what’s in store.
We have the list of the entire season 3 cast, from returning characters to the new faces, including that mysterious Sparrow Academy revealed in the season 2 finale. We’re also trying our best to speculate about when to expect this season to drop on Netflix. For obvious reasons, the showrunners and cast members have been extremely hush-hush about everything.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
We know for certain that there are ten episodes in the third installment of The Umbrella Academy, and each episode title has already been revealed. Based on several interviews of the cast and crew and the little information out there that’s made public, we have a lot of updates to give you. So, let’s find out what to expect from The Umbrella Academy season 3.
Plot: What Can We Expect?
Netflix
In season 2, we witnessed how the two world-ending apocalypses were averted. So, there’s a high possibility that the agenda for this season will feature preventing more Armageddon. What was evident with the season 2 finale was that our favorite heroes will be head-to-head against a similarly powerful group of individuals. The introduction of The Sparrow Academy in the final episode shows another group of seven members with their own set of abilities.
The Sparrow Academy was first seen in the last few pages of The Umbrella Academy’s latest graphic novel volume called Hotel Oblivion. So, it’s clear that this isn’t an original and exclusively-developed group of superheroes for this show. That said, we’re still excited to watch them come to life.
We can also expect to be checking into Hotel Oblivion. For those who don’t know, this is a hotel-style space prison where you’ll find some of the worst supervillains of the galaxy incarcerated by The Umbrella Academy and other superheroes, as per the comics. So, pretty sure we can expect to see some new villains when the third season is out.
Cast: Who We Expect to See?
David Castañeda, Tom Hopper, Elliot Page, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Aidan Gallagher, Robert Sheehan, and Justin H. Min are all confirmed to reprise their roles as the Hargreeves siblings. Colm Feore is set to reprise his role as Reginald Hargreeves, and Ritu Arya will be returning as Lila.
The second season finale also introduced the Sparrow Academy. This is a new group of superheroes in an alternate universe where our original heroes now live and is formed by a still-alive Reginald. Justin H. Min will be playing the alternate-universe version of his character Ben along with a bunch of new faces.
Justin Cornwell will be playing Marcus, the new leader of the Sparrow Academy family who keeps all of his family members in check. Britne Oldford will be brought on to play the character Fei, a smart but lonely misanthrope. Genesis Rodriguez will be playing Sloane, a romantic dreamer, and Jake Epstein will be playing Alphonso, armed with a biting sense of humor. Cazzie David is roped in to play Jayme, who’s a loner, doesn’t speak much, and whose only friend is Alphonso.
The seventh member of the Sparrow Academy is Christoper. Interestingly, they will be played by an Existential Dread-Inducing Psykronium Cube. Christopher is trustworthy, loyal, and is capable of turning a room freezing cold and inducing paralyzing fear. And, of course, a large, telekinetic cube. We get it if you’re more confused about what to expect after reading about Christopher, but now we at least know why there was a giant cube in the season 2 finale.
According to Complex, Javon Walton of Euphoria fame will also join the third season. However, there’s no information about his character.
Possible Release Date
We know that the third season of The Umbrella Academy is officially coming out on Netflix sometime this year. Though there’s no official date announced yet, it does not mean we can’t speculate.
We know that the filming for this season was officially wrapped somewhere in September 2021, but given the number of special effects used in the show, it’s safe to assume that there will be a big gap between the end of filming and the actual release date.
The show’s visual supervisor, Everett Burrell, told Gold Derby that season two’s apocalyptic vision took “months and months” to plan. He further added, “A lot of the feature film effects tools have now trickled down into the TV industry, so we’re able to get bigger and more epic-looking stuff… So every season, we have to top ourselves by utilizing the newest and best tools that we can get a hold of.”
Our best guess is that the series should potentially release in the first half of this year on Netflix.
