Although The Vampire Diaries wanted the love triangle between Elena, Stefan, and Damon to be at the core of the show, another unexpected connection grew to become one of the most significant in The Vampire Diaries Universe. Caroline Forbes and Klaus Mikaelson’s relationship became a staple of the franchise. In the aftermath of breaking his werewolf bind, Klaus continued to cause chaos in Mystic Falls in his strive to build a Hybrid army, and along the way found himself growing more intrigued by Caroline Forbes. Caroline had a way of seeing the best in people, and even with Klaus taking on an evil reputation, she still saw and brought out another side of him, one that showed he was capable of caring for people other than himself.

When Klaus moved to New Orleans, the duo may have been separated, but a connection remained, as it seemed they continued to be drawn to each other. Knowing she and her daughters were in danger, Caroline brought Josie and Lizzie to New Orleans looking for Klaus, knowing he could help. Klaus and Caroline’s dynamic continued in the final season of The Originals. Their reunion showed Caroline unafraid, to be honest with Klaus, about how his absence from Hope’s life is not helping her. Caroline even makes a point to appear on Klaus’ last day, taking the opportunity to say goodbye and take the tour of the city Klaus had promised years before.

It Transcended Shows

Although Klaus and Caroline’s relationship started in The Vampire Diaries, that is not the only show that would encompass how essential their relationship was. When Caroline appears in The Originals years after she and Klaus had last seen each other, it is as if they are picking up right where they left off. Caroline confronts Klaus directly, and although she interrupts his killing spree, Klaus is happy to see her. Caroline and Klaus never seem out of sync or like their dynamic in Mystic Falls was a fluke.

Instead, Klaus makes a point to assure Caroline that he would have always noticed her. Legacies also has a few references to their relationship. Hope’s Miss Mystic Falls dress is the one Klaus picked out for Caroline. The alternate universe episode claimed that Caroline and Klaus would have gotten together and run away in a world where Hope never existed and people were hunting down supernaturals.

Caroline Brought Out Another Side Of Klaus

At first, it appeared that Klaus only cared about himself, his immortality, and his Hybrid army. Then, it became clear that Klaus had cared about his previous friendship with Stefan and his siblings. However, his romantic interest in Caroline is the first time The Vampire Diaries highlights how different Klaus can present himself if he cares for someone. When they reunite years later, Caroline explains that while Klaus may have been a villain to many, she knows he was never the villain in her life. Caroline brought out a more caring and playful side of Klaus, rather than the antagonist that often showed himself to Elena and the Salvatore brothers.

Klaus and Caroline’s conversation just before he gives Caroline his blood to heal the Hybrid bite gives a glimpse into a softer side of Klaus. Caroline’s first birthday as a vampire leaves her nearly dying, and although she could choose to die, Klaus ensures her there is a whole world out there to see and explore if she decides to live.

There Was Never Good Timing For Them

Even though Klaus and Caroline’s mutual attraction was hinted at and teased, there was never a good time for them. Other than sleeping together once in the woods, Klaus and Caroline never could take a step further in their relationship. However, that does not mean that Klaus never made his intentions clear. Klaus leaves an open invitation for Caroline to join him in New Orleans and states he will wait for her no matter how long it takes. Although Caroline never entirely takes Klaus up on his offer, the suggestion that she could have, had Klaus not died when he did, is a possibility.

Eventually Becoming Parents

Unexpectedly having children may not be a usual way to bond. Still, for Klaus and Caroline, who each face the impossibility of having kids as vampires, it gives them another level of understanding each other. At first, Caroline is insistent that Josie and Lizzie are Alaric’s children, not hers. Then, however, a phone call with Klaus gives Caroline an unexpected and insightful perspective into her situation’s unusualness.

Klaus, having been a father for a while by the time of the conversation, comes from knowing that his family makes him happy and references how it is okay to love something or someone, even if they cannot explain why. The conversation helps Caroline accept her connection to the twin babies and helps solidify her decision to become a mother to them. Years later, the link of them both having been parents for years enables their drive to search for Hope.

A Final Goodbye

At the very beginning of their story, it may have been laughable to suggest that Caroline and Klaus would become so important to each other that she would come out just to say goodbye to him. But, knowing that Klaus is willing to sacrifice himself for Hope brings Caroline out to New Orleans as a part of Klaus’ sendoff while also giving closure to their relationship. Although it is devastating to have Caroline walk away from Klaus, it is also meant to be a testament to how much she cares for him, and at the end of the day, she does love him, even if they will not get a future.
